Blackberry Phone Fun!
« on: 13 November 2008, 09:35:37 »

Silly little me, had an N95 and not terribly happy with its inability to view web pages without breaking them into unreadable bits etc so upgraded to a Blackberry.  Did my usual and compared lots of phone specs, found the odd review and best I could get on an upgrade deal was the Blackberry Bold (from Orange who I needed to stay with).

Ordered it early evening, arrived by 9.30 the next day.., very impressed .., but downhill from there lol.

Its defo a 'smart phone'.., my N95 was too a year ago but it seems to have gotten a lot dumber in the last few months (along with its owner it seems).  The blackberry makes my N95 look quite antiquated.

BUT

what I didn't realise was while the blackberry is more able net wise.., its also a whole different ballgame too - works differently compared to any mobile I've used so far (that could be an advantage but we'll see).  I got into texting very quickly once it arrived but oh dear, am still waiting to figure out how to get on the net lol.

U don't have a normal browser (tried to install opera mini on it with no luck so far).., u have a blackberry browser (and u have to pay to use it FFS, but I complained to Orange about not being informed of this and they worked it so i didn't have to).  To get that to work, u have to register on a blackberry orange website.  Ok, I have gotten that far but still waiting to get on the net lolol.

I'm now on a website called blackberry 101.., lol.., and it is.  I know what BIS and BES are now and gotten emailing sorted, but still waiting to find out how to get on the net he he!  Give me a year or two..,

Am I the only person in the world that thought they were fairly IT competent but got a shock when they received a blackberry mobile?

so upgraded to a Blackberry.

 :o :o :o  ;D ;D

More of a down grade, blackberry made by RIM are just awful, the user interfaces are just shocking bad! Opera mini does work on them, but i don't like it, it usuall defaults to turning the transcoder on, which again sucks.

I too wanted the HTC Touch pro, but O2 are messing around too much with its release. I hardly use my phone as it is, i don't text or call anyone that much, so i am going back to pay as you go!

Orange only did one HTC and it wasn't what I wanted to be honest.., altho the latest HTC release I would have died for.., but was only on T mobile network.

If I don't like the Blackberry, will probably bite the bullet and sign up with Tmobile.

To be honest, I have gotten on the net using the Blackberry now (think the problem is the customer services at Orange.., they aren't as up on how to use these newer smart phones as I expected) and its a vast improvement on my N95.., no more swinging around looking for checkboxes and pages load up a heck of a lot faster.

But lol, good as I am at multitasking, I can't work on a Range Rover, keep an eye on the 2 year old and learn how to use a Blackberry at the same time lol.

Still rather put off by this extra 'call plan' charge Blackberry levy.., when u are already paying your network it seems a bit of a liberty even tho its small.

so far this year i have had the iPhone, HTC touch, HTC diamond Nokia E90 and the Blackberry 8000....

Blackberry wins everytime, all the others have been sold on....

Windows devices still have the same issues they have had for the last few years, multiple apps make them crash, battery life is a joke

iPhone was a cracking piece of kit, let down by an absolutely dire bluetooth setup that either wouldn't connect or gave a bad receiption and battery life on this wasn't good

E90 couldn't keep up with keystrokes and kept locking up and crashing

At home i have the new blackberry bold, will be using that as of tomorrow and the 8000 then gets retired, yes the blackberry doe have its issues, but they are in no way as bad as the others i have used this year.

the blackberry talk plan i believe is £2 a month, it does allow for the emails to be delivered to your handset as soon as they are sent to you....pretty much, and that has helped me in the past.......

If Blackberry was so bad why are other phone manufacturers now looking to implement blackberry server compatibility?

I have a blackberry which I use in conjunction with my mail server at home, it runs BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) so I have my own mail domain and get the mails delivered straight to the BB wherever I am.
I look after BES servers for work and once you use a BB for a while they have lots of really good features but they are different from most mobiles in much the same way that iPhones are different from other mobiles.
I think that from a point a few years ago when everyone was trying to be more Nokia than Nokia, mobile companies are diverging these days to get their own branded style.

I have a blackberry and while the email (work) is great (invaluable for me), the phone itself is poor compared to my previous Nokias and battery life is pretty dreadful.

I agree with the previous comment that the UI would have done well to imitate Nokia's.  At least most people know how to navigate around the menus.

Had Blackberrys for work for the last few years and I've got used to them.

They are actually a good phone (most important).
The browser works (on Vodafone anyway).
And I find the keyboard is much better for emailing/texting (next most important).

They do take a bit of getting used to. But there's no way I would go back to a Nokia now. They look and feel cheap and tinny in comparison. And the N series are still unreliable.

Stick with it for a couple of weeks SheWhoMustNotBeOUTBID. Then let me know if you want to get rid of it.  :)

I just got a new blackberry 8310 smartphone, lot better than the prvious one which as a couple of year old, have had it synchronised to our server, get onto the net no problem, and this one also has a camera and sat nav, which I have already downloaded :y...........so overall I am pretty pleased with the new one, has more features than the previous older one, just waiting on a belt holder for it, handsfree for the car etc.. All paid for by my employer of course, along with this nice laptop I am currently using :y
