Just a quick heads up incase...

My Step Dad is fully-comp insured with the AA on his Focus (full no-claims too) and has 'Other Car Cover' on his policy...

His car was in the garage for some work a while back, and so as he was using a courtesy car, thought best to ring the AA and just double check make sure that it was fine...

"That will be £25 sir" was there response...

Apparently, even though he has 'Other Car Cover' on his insurance, he has to let the AA know each time he is given access to any car (even my Omega) and 'Pay Up' £25, or his policy will be null & void in the event of a claim...  He rang 3 times, each time said the same thing.

So, even though its on the Insurance, there is a small-print clause that if he doesn't pay up the £25 extra every time he has access to another car, the policy will be voided if he does happen to have a bump...

I don't think there are any other companies doing this or not (I know mine aren't) but just giving the heads up for those with the AA just in case its affecting you too...

Needless to say he's currently sat downstairs now mastering Confused.com and that other one (go compare is it?)

Surely that's to add yourself to another policy as a named driver, as in the case with the courtesy car. If the car is still on the road & he's insured to drive other cars with 3rd party cover, then you don't need to ring them every time your shifting cars about on a drive etc ...... that's how I'd read it

I used to 'borrow' cars from the garage i used to take my omega to.... from what i was told....all the garage cars were insured for any driver over 25.
Maybe different garage have different policies i guess.....but be a nightmare for them if they did.....having to keep changing policies on all their cars everytime an employee left or was hired!  :-/

I think you'll find that now most, if not all crash repair and service depts when offering a loan car will want your policy so's they can temporarily transfer your policy to their car. That way its your policy that picks up the bill for any damage.

Well as gwa said, most courtesy cars do transfer over, but when asked, the AA said this is applicable to 'all', so even to drive my car, or drive one back which has no insurance at the time (for example, just bought) he still has to pay the £25... Regardless if there is a policy on the car already or not.

Hmmm, reading on through this thread, it was just by pure coincidence and luck that this was discovered. Otherwise the driver could have unwittingly been uninsured. I know all this crap about 'read the small print' and/or read the policy .... but this smacks of either hiding things away or not actually telling you before hand (like put it in the windscreen & excess's section) etc. If you have time I'd take this further i.e Ombudsman, OoFT and the likes.

Well he's requested all this in writing, so whenever that arrives, he's going to see what his options are...

I think that our house insurance is with the AA.

Expensive,because our house is Victorian.

They tell us that the rebuild costs are much higher than for a modern house.

All sounds a bit like the insurance after extra money to me.

im with tesco and dont have any driver policy - the garage lent me a car which cost me £9 to insure for the week thru tesco - they just added it to the policy for me.

thought that was quite resonable!
