my second car
« on: 01 January 2009, 22:52:01 »

well i have just been given a family car. well my grandad has had it from new.

its a rover 216 si auto. (1998) its 3 door  petrol 1589cc white. its only got 60,327 on the clock. its got 12mths tax (well will have tomorrow) and mot is due on the 23rd.

grandad gave it to my old gits last year and they have left it on the drive for 12mths drove it 12 miles since they moted it last year.

its tidy just need the engine overhalling as half the history is missing. :( including the service handbook  >:( so i have no idea whats been done when) all i know is the cam belt was done in jan 2002 at 23,711 miles cos there is a sticker under the bonet. i rang rover and they said its 60000 miles and 5yrs. so needs doing.

does anyone know of a rover forum that is a good OOF so i can get some well needed advice? and some where to get parts?

I have got to drive it home tomorrow ( carefully and slow) but then its been left on the drive untill such time i can do some work on it asap.

the cam cover looks like its leaking, i want to do the cambelt, maybe the headgasket as i dont know its interval, full service. just a dam good going over. their was mould all over the inside of the car, yuck and the batt was dead as a do do.

i recon i am looking around £200 - 250 to do all the work on it.

Darn! Gave away my K series cam locking set, although they should only cost pennies. I assume it is a K series as something in the back of my mind tells me that the autos had the Honda engine a bit later?

Cam belt change was straightforward, IIRC.

HGF is common, of course, but not sure I'd do it as a matter of course. A coolant change would be worthwhile, though, and check for sludge in the header tank.

Don't recall any cam cover gasket issues but a mate of mine had one that sprung an oil leak from the head gasket IIRC.

Kev - I think the later "bubble shapes" were all K series - with the older (Up to L reg) being the Honda varient - could be wrong!!

it is a K series engine. the front of the block was covered in gunk which looked like it was coming from the rocker gasket.

its just a bit dunting looking at it as i have never worked on a rover and dont know much about them. bit like when i started on OOF, now i am hapy to do most things! :)

Well, I don't have a P**is pump, but I don't think that's a "tool" by car standards, and is not something I would need to use  ;D ;D

In all seriousness, the K series locking kit is pennies - but necessary!

That age it will be K series, and I have a locking wedge, though possible cheaper to buy one than post - Draper one (K16) is under a fiver from most places.

Being K series, pay mega attention to coolant.  When you refill (I use Vx Red in hers) remember there is a bleed screw on transfer pipe, just to right of block. Is it dizzy, or 2 DIS setup, probably later at that age.  Worth checking the plugs, either way, as minor misfires may also be a factor in the HG failures.

Other than that, fluid and filter change, and flush the brake fluid, and clean up front calipers and rear drums.

Not sure what to do with auto, but I have full dealer manuals here if you're stuck.

Try http://forums.mg-rover.org/ as well

Hi Marie... Change the water pump when you do the cam belt and also, although it's a right PITA, the thermostat! For some stupid reason they always seem to fail in the closed position on the rover k series!!

Personally I wouldn't worry about the HG until it fails... Then make sure you fit the uprated gasket. I'm just doing an 8v K series for Mrs LD!

Other than that, just the normal routine stuff :y :y :y :y
