Firstly (before anyone points any fingers   ) I managed to get the garage to tax the 406 for me. I also got 7 days free insurance with Norwich Union (even if I did have to spend 30 mins on the phone telling them my life history!) - so I'm mobile!!

Anyhow, back on topic. It has an issue - (for which I managed to negotiate a very significant discount!) - but hopefully nothing serious.

When I fired it up at the garage, it had been stood for days. It was mis-firing, idling erratically, and smoking lots (diesel smoke, not oil burning smoke).

Once it had a blast around the block, it was absolutely fine, idled sweet as a peach and no visible smoke at all.

This morning, after being driven yesterday, it started much better, still smoked (grey) too much for my liking. There was a very slight miss for a short while, and erratic idle, but it cleared a lot quicker today.

Thought I would start poking around under the bonnet - and as Mark always says - fix the obvious issues first!

So -

1) first thing I found was a diesel leak. The leakoff pipe on injector number three was clearly leaking and it was collecting up top. There was plenty of length on the pipe, so I just cut the end off and re-seated - much better.

2) Replaced dirty air filter

3) Filled the fuel filter housing with diesel fuel treatment, ran the engine, so it had a really high concentration of it. Did this twice.

4) Replaced fuel filter

Not sure what else to do really - apart from:

5) Italian tune up (!)

I can't think it's injection timing, as it clears when warm and will pull like a train with no smoke all day. Although, the cambelt kit will be done soon anyhow, so it will be checked.

Any ideas most welcome

The hilarious thing was - next to me, were a couple looking at finalising a deal for a 20k+ merc.

They had listened to the sales guy giving me all his pitch about how these pugs are bulletproof, how it starts on the button and sounds so sweet.....

Then the key was turned, and we all had to pretty much evacuate, it was that smokey.

Not convinced they bought the Merc, in the end   8-)

Sounds like you've done the obvious James... If it still has cold start issues then I'd be looking for another leak... It's about the only thing those Pug lumps are prone to! The gearboxes normally fail long before the engine

Give it a really good Italian tune and it'll do it the world of good!

I do know that those diseasels do have a habit of being a bit smokey at startup

Reminds me of when I pulled up on DK cars' forecourt in one of his 2.6s running on 4 cylinders.

THose XUDs are a bit smokey and very clattery on startup from cold, esp once it gets more than 120k on the clock.

Well - had another look, bodgey garage have only changed 2 of the 4 glow plugs  

So I'll do that as well tomorrow.

TB - My old 1.9XUD 405 had over 200k on the clock (original engine) - always started on the button, no smoke or clatter, was a beauty...

Ran it for about 60k miles on SVO too

If they're not Beru plugs, change all 4, James - anything else will last 12 months at best..  You'll be hard pressed to beat GSF for prices on those (maybe even get trade discount now??).

Is the glow plug relay staying active to assist smooth idling when cold. IIRC the relay provides power to the plugs for about 90 seconds, may be cutting off too soon. Usually white diesel smoke is incomplete combustion, any air leaks ? Depending on the model, and some more knowledgeable OOFers may correct me, there may be a cold start mechanical advance on the pump. The XUD,s are excellent engines, poor cooling used to cause HG problems, good back flush and proper Peugeot Anti gel anti freeze is the way to go. I ran a Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD as a taxi from new in 1994 ( Mreg ) to 1999, right to page 60 of the payment book, and to 285000 miles, no engine or gearbox issues at all.
