NA or turbo?
940 is not a bad car, just a bit crude - if it is the LPT it also has a live axle and was designed specifically for towing!
Last of the "proper" Volvos IMHO. Crude, as said, but built like a brick outhouse. And the 2.3 Turbo is a useful source of fast flowing fuel injectors if you're tuning 4 pots.
Did the saloons normally have IRS then?
I know the 760 GLE Estate we had was live axle.

9xx was based on the 7xx
264 265 764 765 had the PRV V6 the 2664cc 2xSOHC lump as used in Renault 30 Peugeot 604 as well.
The 96x had a long stroke 24v straight 6 of about 200bhp and lost a cylinder to fit WWD applications.
As to IRS, TBH I don't know, but I think they did, solid old cars, nicer than the 850s, as they are correct wheel drive and pretty comfortable. Prefer Vauxhalls equivalent though, better suspension and more powerfull engines.
My parents is a 2.3 LPT SOHC 8V simple single point EFI (I think), slightly less power than an X20XEV but a lot torquier.
They had the idea right though a simple tough car with a reliable biggish engine, good on comfort, no wonder they sold well.
