In an Omega......
« on: 12 January 2009, 13:02:36 »

.... the big coil thing is a shock absorber and the long metal (black or yellow) pipe type thing is a damper.

This is because the spring 'absorbs' the shock (therefore a shock absorber), and the other bit 'dampens' the bounce and re-bound (hence a damper).

Right or wrong??

Its also different in 'some' other vehicles i.e. off road vehicles?

The spring does not absorb anything, it merely stores the energy which it will then re-release.

Its the job of the shock absorber to absorb the energy (and get hot as a result!) which it does by damping the spring and/or wheel movement.

Hence a shock absorber is also called a damper and the spring is well a spring!
