To me BMW's are only "luxury" on price alone and the perceived image of them and their engines for "Bloody Minded self-abusers" :D :D ;).

In my book a large Merc, large Jaguar, Bentley or Rolls  is "luxury" in terms of their interior fitting 8-) 8-) ;).

Tin hat on....coat on.......running out fast! ;D ;D ;)

Got any more Lizzie.

Come on tell us what you call the rest of them.

BMW have massive market penetration in the US, they are perceived as THE luxury marque, please note i am keeping the true luxury stuff like RR out of this.
When you pay 50/60/70,000 dollars for your car you have a level of expectation that someone paying a 10th of that price doesn't, so when things do go wrong then you play mary hell with the dealer and you then proceed to let the world and its dog know about it.
Jag lost it's 'luxury' badge once ford got its grubby mitts on it.....i know i could get flamed for that... but they devalued the brand, and the cars today look just like any other tin box with leather and wood in them....there was a time when Jag was very individual, and sometimes set the pace, today they are just about keeping up with the times.
Merc are well known for terrible reliability and their dealers are almost as bad as Alfa Romeo dealers.....and trust me that are shite, in the mid 90's they lost their 'luxury' brand appeal due to the shocking build and reliability issues and more than 10 years on they are still as bad

You are right Jay; I just have this thing about BMW's ::) ::) and some of their drivers who must represent about 90% of my problems when on the road with them doing bloody stupid things; 25% female driven 4X4's in car parks are a proportion of that!!  Grrrrrrrrrrr >:( >:( >:(

lol, I have to comment on that word you have used,  So applicable to BMW's ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Here's one that Jaime posted a while back:

Diary of a BMW Driver
The other day I was cruising along as usual coming onto one of my
motorways, which was very busy with inferior cars.

First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow
down for me AT ALL as I came off the slip road! I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway! (The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn.)

Unbelievably, I had tried to do the same again before I could get into
the BMW lane. (Why do underlings use this lane? Surely everyone knows it is for BMW drivers only?)

Anyway, once I was in the BMW lane and posing along at 95mph enjoying the adulation that the inferior car drivers were giving me, I noticed an inferior car ahead of me which was not only in the BMW lane of my motorway, but was only driving at a ridiculous 70mph!

Naturally, I got to within a foot or so from his rear bumper and flashed my headlights to remind him he shouldn't be in the BMW lane of my motorway and to get out of my way.

Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that,
but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me!
He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill to attract my attention and then urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car.

Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the
man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast!

Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my driver's licence to a Police station to be sent away to
have some points put on! (They're not free points either - they're £20 each and I was allowed 3! But the man at the Police station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me!

See, now THAT's the sort of respect you get when you buy and drive a
BMW!'

Very true of course!

Many years ago now I was joining the M4 from the M5 at Almondsbury interchange Bristol and I witnessed the lovely sight described perfectly in the above story. ;)

A BMW raced up behind a car travelling at the legal limit in the fast lane, got to within three feet of his rear bumper, flashed his lights furiously, 'forcing' the car in front to move over, and he raced past, to be paced and finally pulled over by officers in this Police "Q" car!! 8-) 8-)

I laughed  my head off for hours! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

A BMW is at about Trabant level on my list of desirable cars. A mate of mine was a "BMW man" (no sniggers!) until his latest one grenaded. Apparently it ingested bits of some intake manifold valve which fell apart and it was new engine time at 60K miles.

They have been cheapened to the level that any sales rep can afford one, in order to sell at the Mondeo end of the market and that has run right up the range IMHO. I was in a fairly upmarket 5 series a few weeks ago and the interior was just a huge slab of drab looking black plastic. reminded me of the Morris Ital I owned years ago.

Then there's the image. Not that that usually bothers me (some of you have sampled my dress sense?) but every time I see one on the road I wonder what I'm about to witness and I'm usually not disappointed. Might as well have a car without that sort of stigma, TBH.

About the only thing going for them is their dedication to correct wheel drive, IMHO.

Merc/BMW's are just 40k badges with a car hanging off them.
