how do i partition my drive

im currently running vista on my laptop and im currently downloading the beta version of windows 7,
what i need to know is how do i make a partition so that i have a seperate drive to install it onto and thus allowing me multiboot
any help will be greatly appreciated

click on the start menu, and right click on my comp (or vista equivelant) in the drop down menu choose "manage" the program that loads has options in it for making partitions and/or resizing them. best read thru the tutorial first   :y

If you cannot be prepared to use the OS exclusively on that machine, do not install it.  It is a beta copy, and who knows what the installer will do multibooting.

The beta is really for people with 2nd machines

Under Windows, you cannot shrink a partition ;)

like vista it will probably have to be installed before any other operating system, or it will fubar your boot record. and render xp useless even tho it will still be on the machine.

grab another hard drive and do a fresh install with no other OS.

 ;)

Word of warning before altering a partition size.

Back up any data you require in case you make a mistake or anything goes wrong.

Especially Personal Photographs.

nothing like that on the laptops , all pics etc are stored on a second hard drive on the desktop :y

Not at all matey,  just pictures of my Mum and Nan that I store on my hard drive, and I would be distraught if I delted the files by accident or partitioning etc, even though they are backed up on CD I never know where they are.

The reason I mention photos is that they can not be replaced, just like my Mum and Nan who are sadly no longer with us,

Altering drive sizes by redoing partitions regardless of method carries its own risks.

I have made my point.  tis up to the idividual whether you do CD/DVD backups.

know how you feel in a way, didnt lose photos on the pc, lost real photo's, the ones you can hold in your hand, all the wonders of digital cameras etc but nothing beats holding a proper photo of a loved/lost person.  :'(
