I was driving past BP petrol station last week and found that PB95 cost 87.9p. It was surprising as the next Shell petrol station (within 1 mile from BP) was selling same petrol for 82.9. Today I was driving past them again, and Shell put 1p up, same as BP. It’s really strange that there might be a 5p difference between two places within 1 mile radius. Funny enough, every other place in Basingstoke is selling petrol at the same price as Shell, so it’s only BP that stands up and there a people queuing there all the time…

Yep....BP always the most expensive near us......I have no idea why.....I just don't use them.

I find BP fuels better than the others so i always stick that in, its about 2/3p more than tesco but does not really make any difference money wise, but runs a lot better on BP

Forgot to mention - 3 weeks ago petrol on this BP was cheaper than on Shell!! Suddenly the raised prices - 5 pence a day

I always fill up at shell - my local one is opposite the tesco garage and the shell garage usually match the tesco price but people still que for the tesco petrol??

And I did read at the weekend in Quenton Wilson's coumn that a guy had wrote in and complained of reduced MPG using supermarket petrol - QW stated that is was possible as the supermarket fuel wasn't as refined as the branded fuels so you may pay less at the pump but you don't get as many miles to the tank.

try this on for size then... within 25 yards theres a tesco and a texaco... texaco was 4p cheaper than tesco and they're on opposite sides of a dual carriageway which has a u-turn thing on it (A631 at rotherham for reference)

I'm in Germany at the Mo, and petrol is 1.10 Euro,which at the current exchange is just over a £1.00 a liter

So its a lot cheaper in the UK

QW's talking out of his arse!!!! The fuel is all refined in the same refinery's!!! The only difference is the additives which are used, and all the companies have their own secret recipes

I got this from several sources, but mainly from my Ex Father-in-Law who worked in the Esso refinery

oh yeah.. i remembered something...
the reason BP is more expensive is because they refine it themselves whereas such as tesco just buy it in from the oil companys (just backs up what somebody stated about they all come from the same refinarys

It all used to about RON, not the bloke, the mixture. 95 RON, 97 RON etc. Hopefully one of the scientists on the forum will enlighten us....

97ron always got more mpg according to the trip computer in my old 2.0 and slightly better response

But a German petrol is much better and you can do more MPG.
Buy a full tank in UK and listen to your engine when starting it - knock sensors are adjusting timing and you can hear a knock.
Biggest difference I found was 2MPG more when driving on German LPG.

It's a bit like a lottery over here - prices on my way to work vary between 88.9 and 82.9:

88.9 at home (no chance!)
82.9 (just gone up to 83.9 tonight) at the Morrisons and Shell 8 miles down the road
82.9 at Asda another 8 miles away
2 miles further along the A5, there's an Elf and a Total; both at 84.9

For the last 2 weeks, i've filled up at the Total and the Morrisons and MPG has fallen 10% (could be the sub-zero weather though).  Filled up at Asda Wednesday and back up to normal MPG figures....

Still can't understand why if i turn the engine off for more than 2 minutes, I lose between 5 and 10 litres according to the gauge...which slowly comes back again - or most of it does!

I have to agree with lazydocker about the refinary thing, I also think that with general wear and tear, and a bit of time between servicing, most drivers wouldn't notice their car running any differently whoevers petrol is in it.

but is it me or is the price of petrol creeping up again, almost 90p ltr around here at some garages
