Sold a bike today......
« on: 18 January 2009, 16:53:05 »

a BMX it was fully built as it wasn't quite brand new, no quick-release parts, via ebay. A woman mailed to say "i'll come collect it this afternoon"

she turns up in an old 3 door punto, with her mother in the passenger seat and a 2 year old in a child seat in the back!!

after painstakingly managing to get the bike to securely fit in the car without causing danger to the passengers (that she should have left at home) i was horrified to have gone inside and then looked out the kitchen window to see her then remove the child from the car seat in the back, and place her on her mother's knee, then drive off!!!

Sounds crazy ,and is crazy by todays standards.

However ,as a small child ,I would sit on my mothers or grandmothers lap all the way to Cornwall ,when we went on holiday.

It was common practice, and no seat belts or air bags either. :-* :-*

True, Dusty ---- did likewise -- even made a den in the back of the estate on several trips.   Don't think traffic was nearly as heavy or individual vehicles as powerful as they are today.  Added to that (and this might be my imagination) I don't think roadusers in general were as impatient and arrogant as they seem to be today!

I did something very similar when i collected the estate from reading...wife wanted too come so we had too take the boys with us.

One of the boys in a car seat the other on Gemma"s lap in the back...wouldnt like too do it again any time soon but i didnt feel either the mrs or my boy was unsafe having said that.

Years ago my dad told me how my gran managed to puncture the tyre of a trailer they were towing whilst en-route to the seaside for a weeks holiday.
After finishing whatever she was drinking, she casually lobbed the empty bottle over her shoulder, missed the boot area of the estate car, straight out of the open rear window onto the road behind just in front of a trailer wheel.
It's not just juveniles...she was a geriatric delinquent.

these days with the amount of cars on the roads and the idiots that drive them, she has no idea how dangerous it would be if she'd had an accident, even a minor accident would have been tragic for that child
