Yet again, Mount Snowdon has claimed lives: it`s easy to forget that these are 'real' mountains, not the trainers, tee-shirt and jeans hill walks people might often think.
Sincere condolences to the men`s families...and thanks to the brave lads (and dog) whom searched for the bodies in the face of last night`s appalling weather.

Its sad in this day and age when we are so wrapped up in cotton wool that some people seem to forget the dangers of nature.

Take today, although the snow isn't that bad really, how many drivers are prepared with blankets, shovels, emergency lighting, flask of hot water and some packets of cuppa soups etc?

Sad news........but it is almost inevitable that such things happen with the combination of inexperienced climbers and bad weather  :-/

No that I am probably fit enough to do it even on ideal days, but surely anyone attempting it in the winter, esp with severe weather warnings in place.........

Why do people think they can out do the weather.
The forecasters have been predicting this weather for at least a week, but people still don't listen!

As you say Debs, it is a shame for the families involved.

I also applaud the bravery of the Mountain Search and Resue who have to go and sort the mess out left by these people.

My condolences to the families, and hats off to the brave volunteers that work on mountain rescue, being a mountain leader I know how difficult a job it is.

Sounds like inexperienced people without the right kit, a deadly combination on them hills (dont worry I know they are mountains, I know them very well)

I shall say a prayer next time I am looking at Snowdon from Adam and Eve

My condolences go out the the families aswell, But seriously what the hell were they doing climbing a rather mountain when they knew the weather was gonna turn real bad, its not like we didnt have plenty notice, People (not saying these particular ones) that choose to go out when its like this are nothing but a burden on the emergency services and coastguards.

If I was told the lake would freeze over this week, do you think I would be stupid enough to go diving in it??

There is nothing admirable or brave about going up a mountain in severe weather.

Sorry if I seem to have lack of sympathy but people are taking too great a risk and relying on others to endanger themselves saving their sorry butts.

Must confess I feel sorry for the families... But why do it???

As for your comment TB... I've been out and about today for various reasons. No hot water admittedly but was only local(ish) but: Shovel, water, 2 x Good Waterproof Hi-viz coats, walking boots, hat, gloves and enough fuel to idle car for somewhere close to 8 hours

Tomorrow I have to get over to Reading, although the trip to Hoddesdon is now off as SWMBO had a call saying that they're not opening tomorrow due to nearly a foot of snow today and it's still falling and forecast So will add hot water and food to the "Kit" in the boot, even though most of the snow has gone from here due to rain

Thing is, these people were doing what they enjoyed and in this case, its not worked out for them.....but the died doing what they enjoy.

Do we want the ridiculous health and safety lot to stop this sort of thing happening or, is it not better that we all be allowed to judge risk for ourselves and act accordingly.

Quite possibly.....but when the day arrives that we are stopped from doing things we want to do.....thats a sad day.

In this case, yes, they have paid the ultimate price due to lack of preperation.

We are already in a downward spiral due to the ridicule of the doo gooders in this country sapping the common sense and inventiveness from us all!

I hear what you're saying, and you're right, they shouldn't be stopped by anyone - it should be their choice.

However, they should have decided themselves that this weekend probably wasn't a suitable weekend.


Having now further read into the story (which I didn't in my first post), it turns out they were well prepared for the weather and unforeseen circumstances, but it appears they fell, possibly killing themselves in the process.
