Why doesCOla tast different from other countries??
« on: 08 February 2009, 22:41:36 »

Just out of interest...

I've noticed Cola from, say, France, germany, Vietnam and China tastes different to UK cola??

Is it just me that picks up on this??  Or do others??

Got a bottle of the Vietnamese stuff now, tastes Very sweet compared to normal, goes flat quicker, but strangely tastes better??  Random...

Nicest coke I've ever had was in Portugal.

I have noticed different tastes in different countries but have no idea why :-?

altho the ingredients of coca cola are the same across the world, the water supply to make it is sourced as locally to the factories in each country as possible.

this is what makes it tatse different, there has been a big uproar about cocal cola depleting entire water supplies in some countries to make it.

was all over the news a while back.

Loads of "international" products differ slightly from country to country. All down to market research I assume.

Got to be the water.  I live in Rotherham, but when I go to the coast 60+ miles away the water tastes comepletely different to me, so if thats the case then cola from country to country will vary.

Think you may be looking at this a little simplisticly. May be down the the additives that different countries will or will not allow.
Are we talking Coca Cola or simply Coke or cola, makes all the difference.

Coca cola recipe is the same all arround the world (Appaerently)  when on a trainging course with one of thier engineers years ago to metalbox.  Learnt quite a lot about the stuff.  (and I still drink gallons of it)

Actual CocaCola, not the random alternatives like Supermarkets sell which has more hamster weewee in them than a petshop...

I guess the water argument does make sense tbh...  Still, the going flat quicker... Maybe other country regs in regards to gas & whatever?!?!

That's partly why I was trying to clarify what we were talking about. ;D

well its true  thats why i pay £3.30 for 6 bottles rather than  buying twice as many cans for the same money

Up here we have Barr's soft drink maker, who make Irn Bru......

All Irn Bru is now made in factories in England with the exception of the glass bottles which are still made in Scotland, there is a big difference in the taste of it,due to the fact that Scottish water is a lot softer than most English water,no limescale problems etc etc

Barr's had a 2 page spread in the papers a couple of years back explaining why plastic bottles and cans of Irn Bru tasted different to glass bottles.....the water used was the official reason..

Doug

Purely down to the container, the inside of a glass bottle does not transfer any taste to the liquid inside because glass is effectively 'sealed' where as the metal of a tin can is porous and will 'taint' the liquid inside slightly......plastic bottles will also give the contents a taste due to the the chemicals in the plastic moulding process, all within safe consumable levels but plastic and tin cans will slightly change the taste of the contents..

Its the same with beer if you think about it,a bottle of say Miller will taste better in bottles than in cans...

All to do with containers! :y

yep..the plastic bottle tastes different than the can and also the fast food restaurants open coke is a way different..

I think the difference is not only the water..

Not sure they apply the formula correctly everytime..

It's like Heineken brewed in UK, Poland or any other country - it will taste different.
Anyway - I would say that Coce is like McDonnalds - they will check what do customers like in such and such area and adjust it. some countries like it sweet but I found that comparing to Poland and Germany, people in UK use less sugar, salt and pepper. Maybe that’s why...
Same thing with toothpaste - best and strongest is from Germany. UK one is very soft, I don’t like it as I got used to German paste.
