do you know of any way in so i can salvge some work
i have tried fixboot and fixmbr but that did nothing :'(

Hang the Drive on another machine as an removable drive is your best option.

Dont forget on XP, to untick the 'use simple file sharing' box within explorer so you can take ownership of the removable drive.

whetr do i find that?

I'll do a how to, a bit later, XP Pro I assume and you had Password Protection at Admin Level on the old drive?

If you hang the drive on another machine and the old drive was password protected at Admin level you will not be able to access all your drives files, try this first:

This is for XP Pro. First check: (you need to be as Admin on the Host machine), My Computer, Right click, Properties, do you have a Security Tab (probably not) if not do this:

My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab, Advanced Settings, go all the way to the bottom of the list in Advance Settings, you should see ‘Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)’, Un tick this box, apply and OK.

Now, My Computer (open fresh window), Right click, Properties, you should now have a Security Tab.

Click Security, Advanced, Owner, you can now select to take ownership of your selected Hard Drive, its takes about 10 mins to do a 60g drive and this will now give you full file access of the drive whilst on the Host machine.

It sounds messy, but it’s fairly easy.

Good Luck.  :y

thanks for info have printed it off so i dont loose it i will let you know how i get on
thanks

You can buy an adaptor to convert the lappy HD to fit an IDE (i assume your desktop has an IDE connector, even if SATA drive/s fitted)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-Hard-Drive-IDE-2-5-to-3-5-Converter-Adapter-Laptop-PC_W0QQitemZ350164047639QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item350164047639&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

is it one of these? :-/

That should be ok m8
