HD DVD v. Blue ray

Just seen a report that Toshiba are to stop making HD DVD players/recorders, from March 1st., in effect withdrawing from the technology battle with Blue ray. They are undertaking to continue support for equipment already sold for some time apparently, but do you think it can be relied upon?
What effect is this going to have on the other HD DVD manufacturers? Is it still worth buying the 'old' technology? I was on the verge of buying a Toshiba Combi DVD/VCR/HDD outfit, but am not sure whether this would now be wise.

HD DVD died months ago in reality.

Be aware that the unit you are considering does not play back HD discs anyway, it simply up-scales the standard DVD to 1080p (note also the TV you are considering is NOT true HD!)

My recommendation would be to NOT get a uni with built in VCR, consider a HD recorder instead e.g.

HD DVD is dead in the water.  With the plug effectively pulled, the film distributers are going to follow suit.

For HD films, I'd say go with a gayStation 3.  The BluRay standard is being buggered about with by Sony, rendering first generation players useless, so stick with gayStation3 as you can bet that Sony will keep that fully BR compliant until gayStation4 is out

Is it XBox or PS 3 that plays Blue Ray discs?

gayStation 3.

SexBox360 had an optional HD DVD player, now obviously discontinued

you call it a gay station - is that related to the discs you buy personally - it is not a forced option for us straights is it?

The last of the main film companies decided to go Blu ray only quite some months ago effectively leaving HD DVD floating without a paddle...that left Bluray the clear winner...although I believe like the VHS vs Betamax battle HD DVD was better...

Actually this time the best format (biggest capacity and higher allowed data rates) won.

Some HDDVDs were better than some BRs due to better encoding at the time.

However watch a Pixar film and get blown away
