Once again I've had my next door neighbour complain about the noise from our house (a few months ago she complained about 'Jamie' - my son tapping away on the pc late at night.., I guess keyboard useage is only permissible before 11.30pm.., and actually it wasn't Jamie.., it was me).  We live in a terraced house seperated by a normal cavity wall.  She is over 80 so goodness knows how she hears a keyboard.  

Now its the doors.  She complained about Chris (the three year old) shutting his door repeatedly for half an hour the other night when he didn't want to go to sleep and I put a stair gate on his door to stop him constantly coming downstairs (always removed once he's asleep)so I wrapped a pillow round the door to stop him making a noise if he did it again.  We have a fire door inbetween the kitchen and the lounge hallway.., it makes a noise when it shuts unless u are holding it so it closes more gently.  My 12 year old rarely does and today she's complained about that.

She's not a nasty lady.., just a bit sensitive to sound but its caused a big argument here cause I have pointed out to Jue that sometimes boy's forget that there are other people in the world and I can't follow along behind him all the time in case he drops a pin.

Anyone else got neighbours who can hear a pin drop from a mile away?

God help us when my Denon Amp arrives on monday.

see my post !! i dont mind pins dropping but constant doors slamming due to downright laziness is another matter. i loathe my inconsiderate neighbours and do not look at them and treat them with contempt.
they leave mess about and dont even clean up their baby sick from the communal area, and when i took a water filled bowl down she still even expected me to do it !!!!
if you still get on with her id invite her around to get to know you better then she may put up with the noise a bit cos you are a friend.
me id go around mine with a mask and chainsaw.....................

No we are fairly considerate, keep the path ways clean including salting her paths (and a few others) and keeping the areas clear of snow during the last few weeks.  

We do get on with her generally but she just pokes her head up every once in a while about noises.  I've only closed the fire door because today I've got Jue building a lean to outside the back entrance and I'm trying to keep the kitchen floor reasonably clean (stops my toddler who seems to find dirt even if there is a thimbleful around from traipsing in and out but means my 13 year old forgets to close it quietly).  But complaining about keyboard tapping noises was a little bit OTT in my opinion lol.

As far as I am concerned as long as the door isn't crashing shut when we are supposed to be sleeping and its not too often, the odd exception should be just 'oh well, we all have to live and sometimes noise does happen'.  I don't complain about other's unless its very bad and unsociable hours (and if a party, if I didn't get a invite he he).

I know it sounds perverse --- but sometimes the older generation complain about insignificant things because it's the only time they have any social interaction --- bit like kids misbehaving for attention.  My dad is a bigger kid than I ever remember being (selective memory), for instance, if he wants something, he wants it NOW !!!!!  And he will complain about the silliest things, while ignoring all the good.I tell my kids to look at my dad and be prepared for when it's my turn (unfortunately they just promise to put me in a home!) !!!!!!

If it's an older terraced house it will be suprising what you can hear,when i lived in one i was between a old woman  who rattled around(literally!) clattering pots and pans and an asian couple and their small kids,you could hear them talking at the dinner table!sound insulation in older houses is virtually nil!

I'm blessed with good neighbours. In 7 years they dont seem to care what i do. Could because i never complain if they want to make a racket sometimes. Live & let live.

Seriously Helen, could it be that using the keyboard is reverberating through the table it's on, into the floor or against the wall, so magnifying the effect? I can't believe that she can hear the keys alone.
Can you not arrange some form of door closer. It makes for a more pleasant life if neighbours have no reason to complain.
It's also time she started going deaf at 80 years old.

Unless of course Helens kids tap the keys with a hammer then the old lady has a point.
