I have no internet, so i keep nipping to my parents house.. All I need is an internet connection, i assume they still require a phone line??

I dont need the fastest net connection in the world either, but a reliable enough one would do, and i dont need any TV package with it

anyone any recommendations?

You'd need a telephone line except if you went with cable...

They tend to work out at a similar price if I remember rightly...

Over a telephone line, broadband speed is affected by the distance you are from the exchange.  You don't get this problem with cable.  However with cable, your upload speed will be cr@p.  That doesn't bother me though, we're on Virgin media broadband

Another thing to think about is buying through a cash-back website.  We got £100 when we joined Vigin through one

We don't have any download limits on Virgin...  Can't be sure about the other providers...

i use the vodafone dongle,got it in curries. one off payment of  £50,with £15 top up included. when that runs out you just top up again,it works just like a mobile phone top up,and works perfect.

4 ways of providing broadband(ish) connections

DSL - runs over copper pair, usually over BT lines. Most common.
Cable - runs over coax or fibre. Poor availability, and variable service
Satelite - Expensive, high latency
Mobile/3G - Expensive

rule out satelite.

3g is good if you want to use in different places (assuming 3g signal!), obviously not fastest in world.  generally low transfer limits.

Cable - often through Virgin.  You'll either be really pleased or really disappointed. The technology is fundamentally flawed.

DSL - so many different providers, all offering slightly different things, you need to do your homework.

Cable's looking favourite since we dont need the land line but at the same time, the phoneline packages look like they can work out cheaper

forget what has been posted by others - first question - do you have a mobile phone and who is it with? - you may get internet for nothing (Orange) - or £7.50 O2 - if you go via landline. Do not buy the mobile dongle version unless absolutely necessary.

o2 pay and go, heavy texter and most mates on o2 so costing me about £75 per YEAR

i'm finding most internet deals are wanting about £23 a month, is there owt cheaper?

We have BT broadband and I have a 3g dongle, so I can use the laptop at the caravan. Landline internet in our village is poor, my dongle is faster My Dad is talking about getting a lap top, to have a look around, Mum still uses dial up for her internet. Suggested they get a dongle, same village, swmbo suggested they get a dongle and a free laptop. :-/

i refuse to have a landline as i dont need it so not paying a line rental for something i wont ever use. so no broaqdband at home. im happy enough how im doing mine

The Virgin Media network in Manchester is one of the better ones for Broadband. You also have the call centre in Wythenshawe and they tend to ensure the network where the centres are are work well
