I have a BT landline(had it anyway) and my broadband is with talktalk,
dont know what the download limits are,but i never exceed it anyway.

It costs me £0.00 per month!!

I get free calls to any landline any time(including International) and the mobile calls i class as needed i have on a friends and family type thing which are also free.....as long as i remember to hang up and redial after 59 mins,i have a fixed fee which i go over sometimes, Banks,Insurance calls etc,but it cost me £20 per month

I can live with that ;D

That's the catch - if using an ADSL internet service, you need a phone line, so BT.  Doesn't mean you need their internet (although I use it).

There's a few "free" internet deals, but normally tied in with another service (i.e. Sky, Orange, TalkTalk).  A 3G dongle will only work if you get a good signal, so very area limited - but if you're a good way from the phone exchange you may only get 512k anyway via ADSL.

We went through the pain at work recently - 8 miles from the exchange we're hooked up to and were using a wireless link half way across Coventry.  Only option to get more than 512k was a Leased Line at £600/month..

At one point we even looked at multiplexing 4 3G dongles together...

Download limits are fine unless you start hitting YouTube with a vengance or use it 24/7 (as we do)..

Beware of mobile based broadband.

I wont bore you with the detail but, the throughput drops off a cliff as the subsrciber base increases

I think you may be better consulting the general forum below and going to the broadband forum within it.

I have no internet, so i keep nipping to my parents house.. All I need is an internet connection, i assume they still require a phone line??

I dont need the fastest net connection in the world either, but a reliable enough one would do, and i dont need any TV package with it

anyone any recommendations?

Get connected to BE ( Bethere), they have an extremely good service and connection reliability, plus good upload/download speeds.
Very reasonable price per month - ours is £17.50 monthly.
You will need a BT line though...

BT line is about £11 a month alone so o2 is looking favourable with basic broadband at £7.34 a month (existing o2 mobile user discount)

not bad for under £19 all in

I changed to 02 about 6 months ago and it has been brilliant and an easy setup - just keep it simple - even better if you have an existing 02 email address. Wireless router is trouble free and their support service first class - although I have not had to use it except when joining. I was up and running in less than 48 hours from placing order.

I had been with Orange for 9 years and 02 is so much better. I think part of it might be the fact that 02 have their own equipment in my exchange - it is when you have what they call BT Whoolsesale involved that one organisation blaming the other kicks in as was the case with Orange.
