Its certainly an education, in more ways than one...   ;)

Wife and I were walking throught the 'window shopping' area and both of us were equally surprised to watch a number of families, (and I mean mum, dad, granny and the 3.2 weans) walking through the same area as if they were about to pick daffodils...

Not fazed in the slightest...

Generally, the Dutch are the most laid back, welcoming people I have encountered in a number of years of travelling the globe...

But as they say round my way, keep a hand on your ha'penny....  theres bad people there too....

Ive sailed there, (via Ijmuiden and the North Sea Canal) spent a coulpe of days there and then carried on down through the canals out the bottom at Flushing over to Oostende and home.

Its an interesting city, but very expensive compared to the rest of Holland. A pint is atleast 50% more expensive. Once youve wandered round the red light area its novelty wears off and I thought it felt a bit 'wrong'.

Only other thing that lets it down is all the drunk hen and stag parties  ;D

Been three 3 times, last time was on my stag do!

Great place.....great sights, good entertainment etc....and thats before you go to the red light district....Teasers is worth a visit.....there Tequila Slammers are legendary...

I will save the Stag night story until a drunken moment at the next meet......not pretty!

As a tip.....Flight to Schiphol and train to the centre (very cheap), book hotels before hand. Hotels can be pricey in the centre but, hostels are very good quality and cheap....a mile or so outside the centre and the prices drop a lot...

At a previous job a long long time ago, there were a couple of semi. pervs.

One went to Amsterdam and paid for a woman to do something.

Another sent off for an adult toy catalogue with free gift and kept waving free gift around at work.

First person did know someone who got arrested for sheep molestation as well!

Fantastic place!!

Go yearly with wife - including Banana bar  :o and errrr teasers  :P

Done all the museums and Amsterdam arena, Heiniken Museum on the outskirts is an essential visit too.

As for hotels, well we go once a year after spending our honeymoon there. Its kind of our yearly treat so may not be to everyones suiting but we stay in Hotel Barbizon - accross from centraal station.

5 star, michelin star resturant and er expensive!

Swissotel and red lion also recommended and both central!  :y
