I have been told that the symptoms I have mean the clutch needs changing.....

It is difficult to select a gear when the car is at a standstill, but ok when the car is moving. There is no slipping, even if I try to make it slip. The bite is about half way up the pedal.

I have also been told there is something unusual about the clutch slave cylinder, and it should be replaced when changing the clutch.
I have never heard of this before, but then again I've never had to get an Omega clutch changed.

Does any of this make sense, does the clutch need changing, or is it the gearbox getting tired?

Any advice greatfully received, and if it is the clutch, what sort of price will I be looking at?

Have you bled the hyraulics?

Reverse bleed the system first and see if it's any better.

I had a simelar issue on a Miggy - changed the clutch, and it wasn't all that better (although improved).

Do you have a solid level surface at your place?

I hadthe exact same problem with my first omega 2.0 16v, but after the clutch was renewed!

it started with a noisy thrust bearing, So I got the whole kit changed, it was never right after, I had to switch the engine off to select reverse, yet if the car was moving I could change gear ok.

I put the car back to the garage and got them to fit another new clutch, this one was ok, The first clutch was a pattern part, and by the way they spoke of it, it was remanufactured, the second clutch was a genuine vauxhall one, I was not charged anymore for the second change or the difference in price.


Is your car a 16v?

I have a genuine vauxhall clutch kit here in its box, But I think its for the 8v, Not sure if there is any difference in the box or flywheel, maybe someone else will know

Yes it is a 16v, and I hadn't thought about trying to bleed the clutch, because it feels perfect except when the car is at a standstill.
It's certainly somewhere to start, and hopefully cheaper!

Guess what I'll be doing when I get home tomorrow from work.... lol

I can't find how to bleed the Hydraulics but there appears to be no problems, so assume it is the clutch on its last legs.

Anyone know how much its going to hurt?
As mentioned earlier its a 2.0 16v.

Also is there anything special about the slave cylinder. I have been told it should be replaced at the same time as the clutch but apparently its expensive.

When replacing a clutch, you're best also replacing the release bearing which these days is all in one with the slave cylinder.  If you don't then sods law will dictate that it will fail shortly afterwards - and if you're unlucky it will soak your new clutch in fluid and render it scrap - aside from having to remove the gearbox again..
