an "other cars" section....
« on: 20 February 2009, 10:33:08 »

for anything not an Omega?

Odds are most of us have a second or more cars to look after for the Mrs and family members or what ever, joining other forums for the relevant maker is proof of the success of this forum, i dont think there is any other that gives such quick and accurate info. Certainly the vw and fiat forums are something of a joke by comparison.

I'm under the impression, rightly or wrongly, that a few members have left when replacing migs with other cars?

This could give them a reason to stay, and lets face it the supply of Omegas wont last for ever, we'll need to move on to something else eventually and this could also give us an idea as to whats better cheaper more reliable etc

Personally i cant see my omega ownership lasting much more than 6 up 7 years before it will have to be replaced, and as we know decent omegas are hard to find now never mind in 6 years time.

Just a thought, dont really want to bother admin with it as such, they have enough to do, just wondered what people think?

Cheers

Chris. :-)

I'll purposely make no comment other than invite everyone for their views...

Cons -
Another section for admin to look after, another subforum to browse.
People do ask in gen chat about other cars, it isnt much, does it warrant its own section.
could be a bit barron, 'ive no interest/ knowledge in other cars, so I wont look', in gen chat you are pretty much guarantee'd looks, which 'may' be able to help, which may not happen if it required separate browsing.
Could cause us to grow from an omega forum to a general forum, didnt something similar happen on a cavalier owners forum?
if it takes off, further down the line could require splitting up much further.

Pros
Keeps all other car probs together and easy to find
free's gen chat from car problems completely, which could make moderation easier.

really undecidew on this one.  :-/  probably slightly more on the against going by my list

short term i agree Jimbob.

certainly not interested in making more work for admin, but i do think it would expand the forum, so a bit of contradiction there maybe.

But long term where will the forum be as omegas die off?

those posts that do come up seem tentative, apologetic and rather last resort as if feeling its not allowed but not getting help elsewhere, then often do get a helpfull response.

If other car posts where invited by a specific area for it, would it not take off a little? Then lead into something later to replace any gap left by dieing migs? There by keeping the forum going? Maybe now is not the time as the forum is growing?

I guess im not sure personally whats best in answering my own Q, a helpfull section for members with other makes or a long term thing for admin to consider where they want the forum to go...just wonder if you combine those 2 reasons does it make a case? Esp when you also consider the brains we are lucky to have on here(not mine obviously) they know their stuff and manya lesson learned on Omegas stand well on other cars....

Or just leave well alone as we risk diluteing what we have already as, lets face it, its Admins word on a Q that makes the place.... i wouldnt expect them to get that involved in non omega tbh given the name of the forum.

Just a thought, thinking aloud really...

Edited last paragraph as didnt make sense.  :-[

My personal view is the forum should go where the community wants it to go....

I think Jimbob has covered most of it, but at the moment if there was to be annother section I reckon it would be better for "Home and Electrical".

There are far far more questions about computers, TV, hifi and even central heating problems than there are about other makes of cars.

My views are quite simple ... the more "other things" that appear .. the less of an Omega Owners forum it will be .. :( The odd other thing in general chat is fine .. but seperate sections will encourage more postings of whatever they are called .. which IMHO will dilute the site..

It's not broken (at the moment ) so why fix it ?? If things change in the future, due to membership falling as the car "retires" perhaps then .... ??

Will be too late then.  In the few months I have been a member I have seen people leave (Now Ex members) just because they sold thier Omega.

People come here originally for the sake of owning an Omega, these cars were never designed to last forever, but seeing as Vx have not done a suitable replacent thentheres nothing to keep people here once they sell.

More sections , more interest. At the moment there are 4 main sections which have sub groups.  Even if annother section was created to take away the "Other traffic" and add things like "Home and Eletrics", "Other Car Problems" and even a "Fun and Frolicks Section" that would then keep "Other Business" segregated and allow "Old School" (please dont take offence in this as it is not intended) original members seeing the forum from changeing.  This way they carry on as normal and the forum could if required then accomodate allmembers.

The plus side is that when doing a search it may hopefully put less stress on the server as users looking for items have more segragtion and maybe easier to find.

Just my personal observation as I have been involved in forum admin myself, and personally found tha more sections seemed to work better and drew more uers into using them.

isnt this dejavous? like what happened with cavweb? more and more people sold their cars and moved onto vvoc and the likes. Its impossible to cater for everyone, The general chat area of this forum covers enough non omega stuff for me. any more would be mind numbing.

I'm getting off the fence as the barbed wire is starting to hurt!

I can see both sides but I've got to ebb towards the people saying General Chat covers enough of the other cars and other stuff. I feel it would take away from the fact that this is an Omega forum first and foremost.

If there was another section then there would also be a place to post pics of cars.......

Why do i say that?

Well, why the hell do we have pictures of a Tigra in the gallery section????

Please dont take offence ann or nick, but this is a example of how members on here have other cars and interests in other cars and want to show them and share their experiences with others.....

But in this case, having OOF plates on it doesn't justify its presence in 'Vauxhall Omega Gallery'
