I can thoroughly recommend the strength of the old Laserjet 4000, alas cannot recommend its ability to print, hence able to comment on the printer's strength ::)

I'd recommend the Samsung.  Got a ML-4500 (I think) about 6 years ago from fleaBay, was brilliant.  Just don't leave it in a loft for 18months and expect it to work when you plug it in again    ::)

The advantage of the common makes, such a gayHP and Lexmarks, is you can always get an emergency cartridge from your local Staples etc.

Thats 1/2 the reason for a laser - the user is unlikely to ever need another cartridge, and no worry of dried up ink either  :y

with age, the cleaning brushes that clean drum may go hard, resulting in a new cartridge to improve print quality

I have to print around 30-50 pages a day for work and Ive got a Canon LBP2900i

It was £69.99 from PC World about 2 years ago and has never let me down (touch wood!)  Cartridges are £35 from tesco direct.
