X Box help please
« on: 10 March 2009, 19:51:35 »

My Son just got his X Box back after having a new motherboard installed under warrenty, now we can't seem to get it to go " live" as it won't link up with our wireless router in the house , I did set it up a year ago , but I am wondering if I need to create a new " user" for him? The old one just wont log in ? Any help would be much appreciatted as always. Many thanks

Because you have a new board, you will need to sort out all the wireless settings again for the Xbox.

You will also need to add in the MAC address of the Xbox if your wifi is filtered, as the new board will cause your xbox to have a new MAC address over wifi too.

MAC address will be tied to the wireless dongle not the mobo will it not?

Thats what I thought, but 2 returns later due to red rings & 2 new mobo's, each time the dongle had a new MAC address.

Odd, I always thought the MAC address related to the wifi chipset not the main board.
Mine's on the end of an ethernet cable so no probs like that. :)

thanks for the replies all , we tried connecting ip auto , then put it in manually , still no joy , BUT  I didn't know anything about a MAC address / setting , we have a modem that then goes into the wireless router ( virgin ) where would I find this MAC thing please.

Many thanks

I think the MAC address is in hardware, fixed and different for each machine with a network port. I don't know if the xbox has a seperate network port, but it probably has. So (I'm guessing here) if there's a new motherboard there will be a new MAC address.
Again I have no Xbox experience, but it shouldn't matter, the MAC identifies the machine when it communicates, the wireless router just takes a signal, checks it passes the password bit and then sends it. it doesn't matter who uses the router provided they have the encription password then all OK.
