On my MV6 i noticed on the passenger side front lower suspension arm a kind of a mechanical arm, just a small one looked to be a kind of sensoe?

Could sombody enlighten me what this is and does?

If you have HIDs its probably the rear level sensor for those .... theres also one at the front ..

I take it this changes with weight in the back?

Much more than that .. it changes continually as the suspension moves over the road surface, and in conjunction with the front one keeps the headlights level.

HIDS incorrectly aligned will blind oncoming drivers, so a levelling system is a design requirement. Self leveling suspension does not react fast enough, so these sensors drive motors inside the headlights to maintain alignement.

An easy way to check this is working properly is to pull up sharply behind another vehicle (or facing a wall) with the lights on in the dark and you will see the beam rising as the front of the car dips down.......then they adjust again as the car settles........
