Hindu human rights
« on: 25 March 2009, 19:39:20 »

A Hindu is accusing the government of abusing his human rights by not letting him build a funeral pyre when he pops his clogs.

Quite right. Can you imagine the impact on global warming if we allow people to incinerate their dead relatives on huge bonfires.

I would compromise: They would be allowed to burn their relatives, but they wouldn't necessarily have to be dead first.

And they dump the ashes in the local river....my view, they can break off to Asia to do it!

We are about to move to a new purpose built office soon and space i tight.....yet they get a rather prayer room!. Why cant they just go and use a conference room with the minimum of fuss like they do now!

Can you imagine going to work in a Pakistani call centre and the reaction you would get if you demanded a Chapel to be built on the premises !!!!

i did the refurb on the asdas in small heath in birmingham, they had a preayer room there and i got in trouble just for going in the door. then when i smashed my leg in the warehouse cause there was no lights on it came to there attention why this was so. the cameras couldnt see them knicking all the gear in the dark. was like being in iraq working there. police spent more time in that store than on the streets.

Im a bit undecided on this one tbh.To my knowledge Hindus(unlike some other minority groups)dont ask for much in this country,we dont generally hear much from them or about them as they seem to go quietly about their business without screaming about discrimination etc;Afaik they are peaceful people and can be frustrated at getting lumped in together with other more vocal Asian groups.
So it may not be a big deal to allow this as long as it isnt the thin edge of a wedge from some new fundamentalist strain of Hinduism.
I seem to remember that one of the first of the demanding law change for religious purposes was the sikhs with the crash helmet law, they got their own way on it (wrongly imo) but havent heard any more demands from them since. :-/

If their religion says that they should be burned after death, then what is wrong with a crematorium. No doubt some symbolic difference.

Dont know much about it tbh,I think there are some ceremonial/customary reasons why it isnt suitable, just saying it might not be a big problem as long as it doesnt start a chain reaction and we end up in a bigger mess than we are in already.
Dont mind anyone practising their religion as long as it doesnt particularily interfere with the British way of life.
As for the Muslim fundementalists, very large boat with big hole in the side. ;)

Well, I dont see how it could be done, even if it were allowed. There'd be scores of bonfires every day. It would be like going back to the times when beacons were lit to warn of invasion.

I'm not sure what a burning Hindu smells like but living through foot and mouth pyres I think we stick with two choices -  up the chimney or in the ground. No Hindu diy bbq's  >:(
