no need for the police to attend unless someone is injured or road furniture is damaged, if either party fails to stop at the scene and you have the details/vin number they will pursue it, but may still not attend the scene. Afaik anyway. I am sure Hotel21 will advise...?

Just drove into the back of a woman in a Polo

Coming off the A46, she pulls over the give way line and then slams the brakes on.....I hit the back of her.

'dangle berries'

Mark minding his own business if you ask me...?

Oh dear  not the best place to shunt someone,
I bet the driver will be claiming whip lash over the weekend.
Best of luck, but you hit her and she will milk it.

The Mk1 viewpoint that most cops (and courts/Insurance companies) take is that if one car is planted up the rear of the other then the rearmost one is the one at fault.  Also the same for the domino theory pileups on motorways, broadly speaking.

Great if you have the witnesses to prove that the car in front was reversing, but very very difficult to prove otherwise.....

But should have left a large enough gap too react without hitting the car in front...not something we always do...but its what we should be doing.

if I understand correctly,  this means that if I slam the brakes suddenly in the middle of 120 km/h lane I will be innocent :-?

::)   suitable place for women drivers..

Short answer, yes.

The car behind should be travelling far enough behind to stop in time, irrespective of what the car in front does...

Thats a picture from my city traffic..

so traffic police never applies the rule: twice distance of your X speed..

and shares the points between the sides and check your brake distances and prepare an accident report (if you demand and wait for them)

And the long answer? If a car over takes you, pulls in front leaving you nowhere to go and slams on the breaks what are you meant to do?

As soon as the gap in front of you closes, you reduce speed/brake to increase the gap to a safe level.

great in theory, harder in practice.

Most legal circles revolve in black and white, not grey or glorious technicolour, unfortunately....
