taking advantage of the recession
« on: 26 March 2009, 15:03:33 »

i was offered a job earlier doing a pub refurbishment in fleet, at nearly 600 a week less than i was getting in september.and with the 80 miles a day travelling i wouldnt have nothing left after tax.  i wont say what my reply was to them but it was not very pleasant.  they probably won the tender last yr for the job so will not of had to lower there price for the work to be done, but expect you to though

i put in a lot of hrs and im paid by the hr so it all ads up, but i get no sick pay hiliday pay and i get laid off at an hrs notice most of the time, some companies let you know a week in advance but most of them are thanks very much and goodbye. a good job i can earn up to 250 a day then i can go down to 160  a day but now there offering 80 a day. with no weekend work so not worth bothering about. but im a real grafter and know my job well so expect good money for my services. swings and roundabouts im afraid

Trouble is that unlike 12 months ago, you are now not in an over subscribed skill set.

Hence they will pay the minimum they can (as I and any buisness man would!).

Somebody will do the work as its money coming in which is better than no income for those with dependents.

I think its great, many sections of the building trade have been been demanding over inflated prices for many years due to a skills shortage and what is happening now is a correction (although its under correcting at the moment which is pretty normal in reality).

This is actulay something I haev been predicting for some time

Fair play too you...if you have the skills too attract that sort of money then why not.

Im sure the computer bods would earn good money due too there skills.

Regards the recession and trades i was hoping they would become a little more affordable, well they sure aint round my way. :(

Plumber quoted £450 for a days work...take out a sink toilet and bath and refit....and thats with me supplying and getting rid of old suite. :o

Thats a weeks wages for me...gross wage  :'(22525

marks right that the industry is dead now but i wont refuse work if i can manage on the money, if its in london its ok i can get a btravelcar butdoing about 600 miles a week in petrol and after tax and paying the x wont be any good. in 3 yrs the kids will all have left school so i will get out of the trade and do driving, maybe take my hgv or drive 7.5 tonners or something. for now i just have to take what i can afford.
