Quote and Used Value
« on: 31 March 2009, 08:11:37 »

Hi All,  Just thought I'd brighten your days with an entertaining quote for a cambet change.....!!!  Got lazy in my old age hence the quote......but not that lazy so think I'll be doing the work myself..!!!

I won't mention where the quote came from but I'm sure you can all guess.....

Cambelt and waterpump - £400 (5 hours labour apparantly - on a 4 pot...!!).
Cam cover gasket - £100
Oil Change - £70

What did make me laugh was that all the above were quoted as individual jobs with no allowance made for the fact that some of the work could be done concurrently...!  Concept also seemed a bit hard to grasp when raised....!!!!  Think the expression I'm looking for is 'money for old rope'.

...as a final thought....total for the above came to more than I was offered as a PX allowance on the car a few weeks back.....against a nice 2.6 CDX saloon.....needless to say I walked...!!!  It's depressing how a car worth in excess of 20K 8 years back is now worth less than a grand....glad I didn't buy it new...!!

Cheers for the info....should pass a Saturday then.

Am I correct in thinking that it's advisable to change the waterpump at the same time at the belt..?

It's not the time it takes to do the job twice on a 4 pot car. If your water pump siezes or the bearing fails enough for the timing belt to slip of its pulley, then your valves are going to collide with your pistons ......  :-?

If you're still feeling lazy give Vauxtech a ring... They're normally very reasonable :y :y :y

They used to do all my work to keep a warranty valid on a previous couple of cars. They even managed to get the warranty company to pay up for a replacement water pump when it started leaking as it was, in their opinion, not just wear and tear! :y :y
