car speakers
« on: 30 March 2009, 12:23:41 »

I've tried a number of car speakers so far, but stil can't decide what to buy now.
I've had Kenwood (sound nice, a bit expensive) Sony (very cheap, powerful, nice high tones but lousy bass) Lanzar (total crap) Regent (for a price sounded ok). Now I'm loking at Magnat and JBL but not sure which one to buy.
Ah yes all the speakers I was talking about were 6x9.
So I won+t bother with other sizes for now.
If anyone has some good experiences with other model please recomend them.

I know a few years ago JBL were the speakers that people rated.

The only decent component stuff I have ever has was some Pioneer gear in the early 80's and must admit to hearing a lot of incar systems since that were not a patch on thier stuff.

maybe one of the best guys on the forum may be Dave DND, but either way at the end of the day it allways comes down to personal choice and maybe the type of music you enjoy.

yeah JBL are very good especially for the money, if you go to the cinema often glance up at the speakers there and most are JBL so that says something

That dont mean a lot really as its a very different application

JBL home audio setups are pretty shite for example!

On a car audio setup your looking for high compliance to resist car vibrations etc, cabinet based stuff you work on lower compliance to get better efficiency and rely on the enclosure to provide the damping.

I would not compare laptop speakers to any other form of speakers TBH.

I have some fantastic Labtec stero speakers for a computer, and a lovely 4.1 creative setup I bought years ago, all brilliant for what the, but could never compare them to decent home or car speaker setups.

i use elimental designs in my car great sound and power handling but the tweeters and a bit harsh for my liking

i would avoid jbl,vibe.pile,etc
remember you get what you pay for  its worth taking a visit to a proper car audio dealer  they dont sell rubbish

I know the price is always an issue but not always you get good speakers if you pay a huge sum for them.
I've tried some of the "expensive" brands and this is what I concluded.
Kicker (costs alot but TOTAL CRAP), Hertz (expensive, and mediocre)
Rockford Fosgate (expensive, but mediocre) Kenwood (was expensive back then but better than the ones above and cheaper also.
I've seen a few Magnat speakers in action and they sounded really good and weren't expensive.
I've had not had much experience from JBL or MacAudio but here they're really cheap.
This is the model I'm currently thinking of buying.
Mac Audio MXX 69.3 (around 30 quid)
But the worst speakers I've had were actually Lanzar.
Within one week the tweeters were dead and the bass was almost non existent (they were mounted correctly don't worry).  The speakers were connected to an Infinity amplifier (4x100). After throwing them away I mounted Kenwood on the same amplifier and they worked for years without problems.
One of the brands I've never saw in action is Boston acoustics so if anyone has these speakers an opinion please.
They're a bit expensive so are they worth the money?
