So my Alfa blew up on thursday.
« on: 04 April 2009, 13:35:27 »

After buying our new omega estate a month ago for the missus to carry around the growing family, tonight we will have 2 omega estates.

After my Alfa sport wagon let go in a cloud of steam etc I'm buying another omega estate of a friend to run around in untill I get the Alfa fixed.

Its a 97 2.5 cd auto in blue with only 68K and full history, its had all the usual bits done in the last 10k like the belts, rocker cover gaskets, breathers, bottom arms etc.

Chances are I will sell it on when I get the other fixed so if anyone is after a good one in a few weeks time give me shout but for know I will own my 6th omega.

I think its the other way round now the body work is fine.

Why would I get back in it, I love the way it drives and sounds however this might be the final straw for it and once its fixed I might get rid.

I will still be selling the other mig though as I will need something more economical for work than a V6 Omega after all thats why I sold my MV6 last year.

I always fancied an Alfa.  Are some models better than others?

not really, all the newer stuff (95 on) is galvanised so rust is less of an issue

like the omegas cambelt tensioners are an issue, if they are not changed on time then they WILL go bang in a big way....

they do look great, the interiors are not exactly a button fest but are really comfy.

According to the 'experts' the Selespeed (semi automatic) is the one to avoid, i have one and so far have had no issues, and the flappy paddle gearchange is great fun

There was one in Sunderland on ebay that needed work for its MOT.  It was up for £99, no reserve and it didn't even sell!

I would have bought it but I just bought a Morris Minor.

All Alfas including 1.6 series are gas guzzlers.. Only 2.5 and 3.0 models worth buying for their performance and their design. (I like them by the way..And was planning for the second car before fuel prices go sky high and also Marks DTM warned me..)

And parts prices are ridiculously expensive (at least here) :-/

My 2.0 twin spark engine gives me about 35mpg on a run which i think is pretty good, performance is pretty brisk and a redline of 7000rpm and a variable valve timing system means it is pretty punchy as well

35 mpg is a good value but I'm sure thats not in a rush hour traffic :-/

he we go then my alfa returns an all round average of about 30 mpg and I do not drive slow in comparison my 2.2 mig returns about 24mpg and 3.0mv6 I had returned about 20mpg.

My alfa is 2.0 twinspark sportwagon and performance wise is up there with the mv6 and would leave an omega for dead on a back road unfortunately they are best described as tempremental I think.

Before every one starts slating me for upping an alfa on here please bear in mind with my current 2 migs my total is 6 which has consisted of 2 mv6's, 1 elite,1 2.0cd estate, and my current 2 are a 53 reg 2.2cdx estate and  a 2.5cd estate so I am a big fan of omegas.

Somedays I happily drive to work cruising in the omega but most days I do my 70 mile round trip in the alfa not only cause it cheaper but its also more fun.
