anyone use a video grabber? im lost.......

i bought a video grabber with a usb one side and phono type plugs on the other (vid- l/r audio).
im stumpped on how to use it? i have plugged it all into firstly the tv then the video recorder and set the relevent to av1/2/3 and front connectors but just get a grey lined image on the programme and nowt else.....
what am i doing wrong? i wish to back up some old vids onto dvds. :P

i remember my mate has one and he had problems and hes just e mailed me this link he used, hope it helps

cheers for reply but that only show from a camcorder. ive put the leads in the output of the dvd/vhs player but still no joy, this lot may be going the same way as my old sat nav- under the hammer............ >:(
