Bike Coolant
« on: 22 April 2009, 15:08:50 »

Ok the MT-03 forum are being a bit strange, i would post you the link to the thread, but you have to be registered to view it  >:(

One of the many reasons i think responses there are so slow!

I posted about doing a coolant change on the bike, as the book says just take it a dealer!  :o

First response was:

"It should have Yamaha antifreeze/coolant in from new. Why change it?"

I says:

Bike has done 20k miles as well, i am just giving it a service, oil, filter, coolant ect...

They say:

Make damn sure you get the specific gravity right and use Yamaha coolant mix it's not the same as anti-freeze.....

I have never heard of the mix being referred to as Gravity!

They recommend something called "ProCool"

http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/501089/Lubricants/Antifreeze-Coolant/Fuchs-Silkolene

Is this going to offer significantly more protection than Vx Red? As its almost twice the price!

It's a propylene glycol based coolant. Same as VX Red IIRC. :y

Thanks Kevin  :y

Bike already has GM oil in there, and since the coolant has unknown history i would like to change it.

I'll be popping to the dealer first thing on Sat then  8-)

You used to measure the specific gravity of ethylene glycol based antifreeze to determine the state and mix of the coolant.

Its not so effective on the modern propylene glycol based antifreeze though (which is Vx red) and hence a 50:50 mix will do nicely.

Specific Gravity is the ratio between  density of the 'substance' and the density of water at reference temperature and pressure, hence its dimensionless.

3 years old. Wouldnt bother personally. HG failure un heard of on modern bikes these days, unless your over tuning it. Save yourself the time and money. Finding the correct level can be a pain. You think you got it right, then it spits a load out the over flow. Sometimes over the back wheel as my zx6 and zx9 both did when running in from the dealer. Yams may well be different but if its within service life, which im sure it is, leave it be imho.

I just thought about changing everything, then i known when and how its done. Money not really an issue, its what £15 for a 5L bottle of Vx Red?

I guess its the summer so its going to be warm, just thought it would be a good idea  :-/

I would change the coolant. Whats in there looks blue to me, so is beyond its 2 year life.

I chuck whatever I have in the ZX10, which last time was Vx Red.

Sounds like the Yamaha forum is as good as the MG Rover forum, and I won't even mention the Audi forums....
