$2000 scrappage?
« on: 22 April 2009, 23:43:31 »

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is a really stupid idea?...for a whole load of reasons. Or is it actually another great idea from this super government of ours? Hmmm :-/

would be a good idea if you had a car a few years old , and wanted to buy a new one  - sell your car privately, buy an old banger to get the $2000 trade-in - that's if you want a new car ( does an electric car with a radius of 100 miles really count as a car - does it come with a long extension lead?)

You do need to have owned the car for a minimum of 1 year for it to qualify.

Can't see many taking advantage, with the current market I bet better deals are negotiable should you want a new car.

What do you expect from idiot badger?

He and his boss/predecessor have really effed up the economy and this borrowing terrifies me.

As said before this crisis needs the combined knowleage of Cable & Clark, the only MPs AFAIK who understand finances and how to get us out of this mess.

It was a stupid idea to start with (have a look at http://www.abd.org.uk/pr/663.htm for a Press Release we put out a few days ago explaining why) but he hasn't even implemented it properly.  It's supposed to be helping the ailing car industry, but they've got to put up half the money for it!  He's only putting up a grand towards it, the other grand has got to come from the industry he's supposed to be helping.  So he's committed a struggling industry to coughing up a thousand pounds towards any car sold under this scheme.  Some help!

What an idiot...

It just goes to show how far removed from the real world they are if they believe this plan has any merit at all!

How many people currently driving round in 10 year old cars are in a position to stump up for a brand new one?

The manufacturer would probably discount heavily to shift the car in any case. The government has met them half way in this respect but then they have to dispose of the old car.

If it gets any uptake at all, perfectly good cars that would otherwise be available very cheaply to less well-off members of society will now end up being scrapped.  >:(

I, for one, would be doing all my negotiating before bringing up the subject of scrappage. I wonder if it would still be on offer?

You've hit the nail on the head there Kevin as i was thinking that they seem to have missed the point that it's not just the Manufacturers who are hard up but there potential customers as well so 2 grand is very little help to anyone >:(.

I did not know that! :o Though I'd be lying if I said I was surprised. Just make the whole thing look even more half-hearted and pointless to me.

My feelings exactly!
Although they are also trying to push it as an environmental move too, encouraging people to buy lower C02 emitting greener newer cars....just ignore the fact that the energy consumed, chemicals used and c02 generated to manufacture a new car is equivalent to actually running the car for several years in the first place!!! and also that scrapping good 10 year old cars that are perfactly serviceable also takes energy and as Kevin pointed out earlier, removes many perfectly good affordable cars for normal people on normal wages from the road!!! >:(

Of course I don't think it will be a great success anyway, beacause the only people likely to be drawn in by it are people who were considering a new car anyway. Since 75% of cars on the road toaday are less than 10 years old that probably isn a great deal don't you think :-/

It is simply a cynical headline grabber.
It wont work and they know it wont work. >:(
TBH,this is starting to look very reminiscent of the end of the Major govt.they have almost given up,they know they have almost no chance of winning next time and are just going through the motions and leaving an almost unimaginable mess for the next lot to clear up.
These things seem to go in cycles, and the New Labour cycle looks like it is coming to an end...........but then again,a week can be a long time in politics. ;D

Can't come to an end soon enough!  If this lot get back in though, we might as well scrap our Miggys and every other car we own, because the roads won't be worth driving on, it'll all be buses and trains, comrade.
