New M4 Speed limit - anyone seen it?
« on: 07 May 2009, 01:09:45 »

Between Jns 24 and 30 (and 30 to 24) of the M4 in South Wales, the speed limit has been permanently reduced from the National 70, down to 50mph, for safety reasons, in both directions. (According to signs).

Anyone know this stretch of road?

I am aware that quite often lane one branches off to various exits, and the motorway narrows to 2 lanes in places - however, having done 50mph along that entire stretch of motorway for the last few days, to comply with the new limit, I can't help but feel the new limit may be too low.

What's more, if you drive right on the new speed limit  ::) , say, to overtake a lorry in lane 1 - it's common for something to come steaming up from nowhere to an inch behind your bumper, before swerving out into lane 3 and proceeding at 100mph... (as they always have on this stretch).

If you know the area (As many will) What do you think of the new 50 limit? I am interested to hear your views - totally out of interest. Discuss :y

I don't dispute the temp 50 limits in roadworks mate - but, there is now a permanent 50mph limit between these junctions - regardless of any works going on  :-/

ahh roadworks gone then now?

havent been down that neck of the woods for a good month or two

no need for a permament 50 limit i cant see how that stretch is more dangerous than anyother!

It's like most things these days James, the powers to be spend an awful lot of time and money on studies and over the hill and out of touch experts and then c**k things right up!!! >:(.

I've driven this section on occasion whilst visiting my Son and his family in Ammanford and can't say I've had any problems :).

Ahhh the South Wales M4 roadworks 50mph speed limit  :'( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( The only 3 points on my licence currently...f*ing w*kers!!!

Its a motorway stretch and the roadworks dont really affect it much as far as safe speeds...it has one purpose and one purpose only and thats NOT anything to do with the safety of the road users (or the workmen)...

You were probably the only one doing 50 then, because nobody else sticks to it.

I don't know about people larruping off at 100mph, but it is certainly encouraging people to take chances because there really is no reason for it to be 50.

I've driven it a few times, and the only time I slowed to 50 was for the 2 Gatso's in either direction. Other than that I stayed with the general flow (which was 70 or so).

It's not perminant according to the Traffic wales website, think it's going to be there for 18 months or something like that.

Small world. I lived there for about 20 years. My father and my sis and her hubby are still there.

Its a nuisance James..Im off down that stretch of the M4 in ten mins, in fact i use it every day. At the moment there has been no mobile speed cameras  so everyone is speeding until one day when the world and its dog is so confident of no need to do 50mph along that particular stretch.

Then its pay day for the Feds... >:( >:( >:( >:(

Sadly, I don't get down to our Cardiff datacentres much now, can do virtually everything there remotely.  Haven't been down there for a couple of years, but if its a permenent limit, will have to remember that one  :'(
