VXR SPORTS TOURER PACKS IT IN
Fastest-ever Vauxhall estate takes aim at Audi and BMW
This is the new VXR Sports Tourer from Vauxhall, a 325hp load-lugger that the Luton firm reckons will give the Audi S4 and BMW 335i M Sport wagons a run for their money.
Likely to cost around £31,500 when it hits showrooms in the autumn, the VXR Sports Tourer is mechanically identical to its saloon and hatch siblings.
That means the car gets a 2.8-litre V6 which is turbocharged to 325hp, allowing drivers to accelerate their flat-packed furniture from Ikea to 60mph in just 6.0secs.
Top speed is limited to 155mph, and load-handling duties are looked after by 10mm lower suspension, HiPerStrut front suspension, an adaptive four-wheel-drive powertrain and an electronic limited slip diff.
19ins wheels are standard, but 20inchers will be on the options list, while the Sports Tourer also gets the usual VXR goodies such as front Recaros, sporty steering wheel and unique instrument graphics.
Where the new variant really scores is its practical load volume, which measures up at 1530-litres with the 40:60 split rear seats dropped. Seats-up gives you 540-litres, and Vauxhall says these numbers match the class leaders. The electronically-operated tailgate has a function enabling you to adjust the opening height in case you park under a low ceiling.
Visually the VXR Sports Tourer is distinguished by its deeper bumpers, front mesh grilles and dual matt-chrome tailpipes. Prices will be announced later this summer, says Vauxhall.
