tongue and cheek
« on: 05 June 2009, 20:48:24 »

The company i work for, was bought out by an American firm just over a year ago, since then we have been building a new 'global' platform for our mobile services across the world (instead of having 3 separate platforms)

The writing was on the wall, now we have completed a major chunk of it, the Americans have cut resources in EMEA technology by 50% some very knowledgeable Java & PHP people have been cut.

The have done this despite not having 1 country working on the new platform, and the Americans simply do not understand the european markets. The project is also months behind schedule.

I am safe for now, but i fear London will become a commercial only operation inside 12 months.

I was on LinkedIn today, i saw an interesting job, and decided to apply tongue & cheek. Sent the CV off, within 1 hour got a reply asking me to come in for an interview. Pays 7k more than my current position.

However, i think i will stay where i am for now, i still like working there, great people and i know the current systems inside out, which will become even more valuable as resources go, the chap above me is also going traveling soon.

Still going for the interview though, be interested to see if i could get it.  :)

If it's a secure(ish) position, with a 7K pay rise, then kiss your loyalty and your friends goodbye.

And a recommendation : try and do different projects and jobs as much as possible while you dont have criticial  financial responsibilities..Still too early for you to glue on a fix job.. :y

Very true, probably time to move on in some respects, and 7K isn't to be sniffed at. However, you'd then become "last in" in rather uncertain times. :-/

I joined Linkedin only a few days ago and already I have received 2 enquiries for work. What do you think of it? :question

True, i have been at my current place for a while, that said, 2 of the java developers that were cut, are 2 of the longest serving employee's

So it does not really mean anything these days, the trouble is as soon as this platform is built, all control and upgrades for it, will be handled by the states, which means i will be out of a job.

I don't envy you tunnie, with conditions as they are it's hard to call on the job security front.

I suppose it does pay to 'keep the hand in' whenever attractive opportunities pop up but as always, it's a gamble.

I think it's down to personal circumstances, age, location, family considerations and so on. You're not the first to face the age old conundrum - job security against missed opportunity and subsequent regret.

If personal circumstances are favourable and you can roll with the punches, it might be something to go for, should you not, there's always the possibility, when down the line a bit you'll be thinking, 'wish I'd gone for it'.

Good luck whatever you do :y
