Collision on a roundabout
« on: 19 March 2009, 03:13:10 »

Hi everyone!

I have had a situation on a roundabout where I was forced to dodge another car that was trying to ram me. And because I found this situation to be repetetive I have began to wonder what if I won't try to avoid the other car.
Here's a sketch I've done to describe the whole scene better than I could with words ;)

Please help me out :)

This happened to me aboout 10 years ago in my first new rover
the owner of the other car admited liability untill she got home  then said it was all my fault.

It was a bit of a stalemet untill i got out the old video camera and filmed the correct way to go around the roundabout  and describing my placement on the road and the  other drivers

this all tied up withthe damage on the cars

from what i can see  the other car should have gone in the lane up the side of the purple truck

This happens to me on an almost daily basis on the way to work, and I've asked about asked about as well just in case I forget to brake one day ;)

As far as we can tell, as long as you can demonstrate that you've stayed in the correct lane and the other driver has strayed across the line, you should be able to claim on his insurance.

Don't know if it's the same for everyone else, but it always seems to be either Nissan Micra or Nissan Note's that seem to think you can drive straight across a roundabout without following the lanes! >:(

Ah.....Dunkirk roundabout.

Clearly you are in the right as you were following the correct line around the roundabout, the other driver has chopped lane from the left.....

It looks as though there are no "lanes" through the grid. If you have witnesses this will be a problem if the other car has his nose in front of yours and you may find that you are responsible for not taking due care where priorities are not clear. If he hits you in the side i.e. your nose in front then he has the problem to explain - but there is no guarantee that both sets of insurers would just agree ot pay the costs of their own insureds and you would not recover your excess or other uninsured expenses. May people will just lie and in your word against theirs the insurance companies will not spend money fighting except in highvalue cases. the police will not be interested unless there is an injury,

I agree with Marks DTM Calib...
You were following the correct lane procedure around the roundabout...
Do not admit fault, and stick to your claim that other driver is at fault...

Many roundabouts do not even have "lane marking", however the "lanes" still exist even without markings and should be followed according to the procedures we all learned...

No criticism intended, but the problem with "dodging", when we feel we have to, is dodge to where...??
If we dodge out of our own correct position we risk hitting another vehicle ourselves...!!
