London to Brighton bike ride

I've been asked to do the L to B run (someone has dropped out). I'm not a big cycling person but am reasonably fit (gym three times a week, mainly weights but some aerobic). I'll be using my mountain bike (nothing special, just a low to medium price bone shaker).

I'll get new road/hybrid tyres and probably a new chain. Also cycling shorts, helmat and gloves.

We're in Holland at the moment, so I've already got a sore bum from cycling!

I'll get a couple of training seesions with some work colleagues.

Looking for advice from anyone who's done the ride.

Could not do it myself I am afraid as not fit enough, but a colleague at work is doing, stuffed me for £5 for sponsorship as well.
iirc it for British Heart Foundation, or something like that.

Mind you he does cycle 16 miles to work and then 16 miles home again on most dry days.

He will probably die of heart attack by the time he is 40  ;D ;D

Not advice for that particular run, but would recommend fitting road tyres if the MB has knobblies at the moment and locking out the rear shock if possible.
Knobblies have a load of rolling resistance and rear suspension will sap a surprising amount of pedal power on up-hill sections. 
If sticking with knobblies, pump them up real hard and if unable to lock out rear shock, set it to it's firmest.

Best advise is to get some miles done in the saddle, the more miles you can get in the better, I found weights and stuff like that a totally different ball game than cycling when I was into it a few years ago.

Done it! In about six hours, apparently a good average. Had to push it up Ditchling though, bloody steep and long.

More importantly, I've solved the Elvis mystery. He's riding on a constant L-B-L loop . He overtook me on a hill.
