I agree. I wouldn't want to see them banned though. What place does the government have to dictate how I choose to borrow money?

However, I wish they would ban CC cheque books being sent out unsolicited by credit card companies. Sending cheque books through the post is a risk, especially when the recipient is not expecting one. I have no need for them, they get shredded when they arrive on my doormat, so I'd rather not take the risk of them being sent to me in the first place.

I asked my cc companies to stop sending them, and they do.

I think they should be allowed, but on request only.

They are just an easy way of getting a cash advance.

Here here Kevin.

Our society has no excuse for 'running on credit'.  It is just a sign of impatience and greed.  Most people who 'run on credit' could get themselves out of it by being frugal for a time, then carrying on as normal but with their own money to spend.

Obviously there is a place for credit but it is far too prevalent in the UK.

.........a well reasoned analysis Kevin.

Concerning your comments on these proposals you are correct - they (government) have no right whatever - they lost the moral authority some considerable time ago in terms of being the legitimate arbiter of what we can and cannot do.

Credit and its associated facilitators should be fairly constructed, reasonably priced and provided in such a way that those using it cannot become immersed in debt which balloons beyond control.

The way to do it is to use the cheques, then transfer the balance to a low rate, or even 0%, account. In any event, I agree with Kevin that the government has no moral right to ban credit, especially when you look at its own sorry record on borrowing.  >:(
