Intel - Here We Go Again
« on: 12 July 2009, 01:33:59 »

Am ready to rebuild my computer.  been considering it for quite a while but wanted to wait untill I moved.

Looked at the Intel I7 option.  But the board , memory and PU upgrade on cost alone made me feel sick.

So whilst looking at Socket 775 Options I found this info.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3585

So where's it all going, is 775 on the way out now.? :-/

LGA 775 has been around for a good 5 years or so, which is equal to 50 years in human life...so it's had a good run.

Even LGA 1366 is coming up on a year old, but it only starts to get expensive when you start pricing up the fastest CPU available.

Not the case at all.

The CPU I looked at is £185, the board that I decided to go for is £200.  Then there is the memory, DDR3.  I looked at the fastest the board would take at when I saw the prices I just abandoned the idea.

I really cant see the pont in spending £700 on the 3 items I need to upgrade with.

My current system I have used for nealy 3/4 years, and I end up with that by mistake as the DDR2 memory was still fing its feet and I had a night mare matching the board and memory.

My choice of board was going to be GA-EP45-DQ6, but even when I saw the price of that it made me gip, so I looked at the i7 route.

At least with a 775 I only need the board and when i7 gets a lot cheaper then I will invest in it.

I used to swear by Gigabyte boards, until they released that abortion known as the BX2000.
Since then I've used ASUS, can't fault them for anything.

If you only want a board, then look at the ASUS P5Q3.

I bought that, an E8400 (6MB cache), and 3GB of matched DDR3 (Crucial Ballistix) for £299 all in from Novatech in January this year.

Skruntie dont go for the fastest mobo-ram-cpu route ..next year you can buy them nearly half price..

instead you can buy a good mobo with medium configuration..and load it later..

and go for a mobo with many type of slots and without a gpu on board.. or you will face many problems like me :(

also check toms hardware guides..

I never rush out and buy the new equipment cem.  The only reason I ended up with the system I have now is that a mate wanted a system building and he "Dictated" the parts list and I had to use DDR2 which was just released on the market at the time and the price was stupid.  Any way I suffered a lot of issues includind a DOA hard drive and an Asus motherboard that worked perfecfectly on the bench but had issues when built into a case.  So I ended up with 2 of everything trying to get stuff to be compatable.

Both my mate and myself are now for new computers and my mate has accepted he gets what he is told this time.

I used to keep reasonably up to date by buiding a new computer and then someone was often in the market for a new one so I allways sold mine as used but tried and tested and gave them 12 months on all the parts as a warranty, surprising how often they came back for annother.

Because of that particular build, and compairing Asus to Gigabyte, then Gigabyte won on speed, perforance, cost for more or less the same spec boards and bios.

I will add, all though I dont use Asus anymore, I have had quite a few on various sockets (CPU) and find them generally geared for realiability, rather than speed.  Used a lot of boards from thier sister company as well.

Regardsless of brand though, they all make some good and some bad boards, at times it's just about doing the home work.

Plus, Toms hardware guide, excellent site, but not as easy to read or navigate as it used to be.

Loads of good forums and sites about these days.

Overclockers, tekheads and aria Sell parts and run forums as well, good info available if the time is taken to find it.

dont worry making mistakes is for human..

I , myself trusted a friend in a shop to collect the parts for my latest pc as I dont have time to test them one by one and actually they send me a real garbage.. >:(

had loads of problems when I installed an nvidia external gpu later..

then installed a satellite receiver card.. was nice in the beginning then after few months it started to crash ..
(the reason is they embed another network interface in it colliding the mobo network  >:(.. disabled it)

but still problem arises from time to time.. :P

at least the camera system pc (asus mobo) even its cheap have no problems ( I assemble together) working 7*24.. (only one problem when I cleaned the case with pressurized air the cpu cooler jumped out and started to heat which I solve with some extra cooling silicon)

so next time I will collect all parts myself not trusting some people :(

Personally not a fan of recent ASUS boards due to reliability and stability issues. Gigabyte ain't much better recently, and their support is even worse.
