hi Guys, After some advice. Have been offered a 99 omega 3.0 MV6 in exhange for a car i have for sale. The car is ex West yorkshire police and shows one owner on the log book. It has a Jamie Tomkins engine fitted? can anyone tell me if this car engine is any good or what to look for when purchasing an omega. Any Advice would be massively appreceiated

Hello yet again!!

This engine I know nothing about and have not seen it mentioned myself on this Forum.  Normally, as far as I know, MV6's have GM engines.  So in your case it is hard for me to say what to look for when buying this car in terms of its engine.  However, there will be other members along later who will no doubt know a lot about these power units!!

Lizzie, race preppers and tuners like him normally keep records of the cars they work on, it might well be worth giving him a ring as I can't see him actually getting many Omega's on a regular basis.

At least you can then find out what level of tune it's had, and decide from there.

I was going to add a similar comment but along the lines of assume nothing usless thier is a reciet to proove it.

Without proof of exactly what has been modified (if anything) just dropping the name of a tuning company doesn't make it any more desirable, IMHO.

There are lots of legends of plod cars being "tuned", etc. AFAIK they are not true, save for a few 3.0s that were turbocharged for the PSNI.

I would say just look for usual issues - contaminated coolant could mean oil cooler (but argue that it might be head gasket and you make knock some money off - it rarely is).

Cam belt history (should be every 40k/4 years).

Check for leaks around the cam covers and oil in the plug wells, check for uneven tyre wear, especially the inside edges of the fronts. If an auto, give it a good test drive and make sure the box operates smoothly and behaves itself. Air con can be troublesome so check it works and use as a bargaining point if not.

.. plus all the usual points of course.

the car has had the cam belt done approx 20k ago. Looks quite tidy and goes like a rocket. It does have a plate fitted to the engine with the company logo on in place of the ECO tec plate. the guy has also told me that the manual version is better than the auto?

Never heard of it, so from what you all are saying this the name of a professional tuner of engines then, not a special built engine??!!

it sounds like a pro tuning company but i cant find any record of them anywhere! Just phoned JTtuning and they have never touched the car. Dont mean to sound Naive but i like the car but dont wanna get my fingers burnt! I can post some pictres of the engine later - it does look good!

If you  like the car and you are happy with all the details and price then go for it,
But if you still have doubt about something doesnt matter how small then leave it.
After all you are then the one who owns and drives it mate. only you can choose

Well, at worst hopefully it's had nothing done but an engine cover plate with the branding.  At best it's had some fettling.  Ultimately if you know your way around the what to look fors then treat it as any other car.

Don't forget that many engine tuners are only known amongst certain circles, if he does mainly privateer engines for hill climbs etc, he won't be known amongst drag circles etc.

By the sounds of it though, one of the previous owners had the branded plate put on and everyone from then on is convinced that it's tuned  - placebo if you will.
They could have just done an oil change!

2 things there.  The 1st being he is selling the car, so everything thing about that car will be the best, if you belive him.


Auto versus manual.    Simply a personal choice.  Mine is to go for an auto.  nig lazy car that can provide enough grunt at the press of a pedal to prove a point against a lot of small hatches.

if you are after performance, definitely go for a manual..

and if possible have it compression tested..

check for cold/hot idle problems..
