On the subject of text driving...
« on: 04 September 2009, 22:36:00 »

This early evening - still light - we were crossing a road. All seemed clear, and we were half way across - when a BMW came flying towards us out of nowhere, on the other side, at absolutely warp speed (in a 30 zone).

We wouldn't have made it across safely, so I pulled Maria back.

While doing so, we are now in the centre of a road, and slighly inconvenience a driver of a small red car who has now come along the side of the road we originally came from.

I was about to wave my apology - when she blasted her horn excessively at us and began shouting - while at the same time sending a text or otherwise tapping into her phone - which she continued to do while driving off.

Texting and driving really, really, gets my goat.

Admittedly, in an ideal world, we shouldn't have been there - however a) there was no way you could reasonably have expected this BM to approach at such speed on the other side - and b) the person in the red car would have (or at least, should have, if they weren't texting) seen our position, and not been so agressive about it.

People just have blatent disregard for the safety of themselves and others and the laws - I am all for a zero tolerance approach to phones.

Comes from having their heads full of Big Brother, Hello magazine, who they did last evening, how much alcohol they consumed at that party, bla bla bla - in fact their befuddled brains are focussed on anything but controlling the vehicle.

Seems to be the standard adopted by a lot of drivers now - and yes James - there should be a sub-zero level of tolerance exhibited :y :y
