What can i say to that,£400.00 for a translater, that would pay my sick pay for 5 weeks , you don't know how mad i am at reading this---JK, forgot to add ,i can't get help with the rent either >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
It wont help but might give some light relief and restore your faith a little - in the recent Euro elections an English Democrat was elected in Doncaster ( IIRC ).I think he might be the new mayor or something, any way, part of his manifesto is to stop paying for translation services and printing council documents in 12 different languages. He has been immediately branded a racist of course. When you listen to his explanation it makes very good sense, " there are  people in this town who have lived here for over 30 years and cannot or will not speak English, they are putting themselves at an enormous disadvantage in both the employment market and in everyday life. This council spends in excess of 1.6 million pounds a year on translation, money which could be better used elsewhere, in future if English is not a persons first language then they will have to bring someone along who can translate for them, perhaps a family member or friend".
This is not racism, its common sense, lets hope he gets his way.

Its already like that in other european countrys, I know from fist hand that it is like that in Germany.
If you move to live and work in another country then it is only fair that you make an effort to speak the lingo.

JK the following is from the Directgov website http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/DG_10016082 You may have already seen it but I thought it worth posting just in case.

You may be able to claim Incapacity Benefit if you were under State Pension age when you became sick and any of the following apply to you:

    * your Statutory Sick Pay has ended, or you cannot get it

From experience Incapacity Benefit (or Employment and Support Allowance as it is now known) is not dealt with by the Job Centre and you have to apply for it separately. My partner got it while she was still "employed" so there is no reason why you should not be able to get it.

Went down to the cit advice yesterday and they have filled out an appeal form for me but they told me not to get my hopes up as 99% of people who have had a medical are told what i was told and it usually takes two to three appeals to have your allowances back , they apparently do this so people will just forget about it and look for work ,however with my opp very near he said they might have overlooked this , also with me still employed that should go for me as well ,but thanks for your input, and i do appreciate all the comments and reactions that have been show in the response to my posts, it gives me a bit light at the end of the tunnel ,but i have to wait and see what the reply is from the appeal ,many thanks ---JK  :y

7 months ago i had an accident at work ....

As someone else pointed out, this is the key. Have you spoken to a solicitor? Are you in a Union? Your employer owes you if they were negligent.

Good luck.

Hi everyone , just a word to let you know what happens when you work from 16 to 50 and have paid your national insurance for your full working life.
7 months ago i had an accident at work ,and ruptured the ligaments in my shoulder, i have been for a MRI scan and the specialist said the damage will have to be operated on and will fit me in for the operation asap.I have no problems with that but as i am a concreater ,i can't lift the shovel with one arm ,and so i have been on the sick .I have received the date of my operation [19/08/09]. this has been a long wait ,but it is not my fault that i have had to wait this long. Then the bombshell has been dropped.I have now had my sick pay stopped, as i have been on the sick for 7 months , even though i have my opp in 14 days time, i now have nothing to live on for myself ,zero,HOW CAN THIS BE,I HAVE PAID TAX ALL MY LIFE AND NATIONAL INSURANCE, i thought this is the reason you paid it ,for such unplanned emergencies .I can't claim any other benefits as i am still employed, when i contacted the job centre plus, they said that as i have worked all my life, and had no drug or alcohol problems ,i can't claim anything, but must look for a job for the 14 days that are leading up to my opp, even though i am still employed, so who wants to hire a 50 year old man with one good arm for two weeks, i have shown ghost driver the letter that i received and he could not believe it either, sorry to bitch on a bit but it is quite upsetting, and as far as i can see well wrong, i have appealed but it is not looking good to be honest, >:( >:( >:(---JK

Just highlights the crappy country we live in.
Don't get me wrong, it's not the physical place, but the way it's run.

Hope you get sorted soon, matey. ;)

Agreed, I have been in this situation.  Last time was only 2 years ago. I objected to goingto the Job Centre as  had a Job, pleased I did though because  got a Grant to help me back to work, even though I had a job to go back to.

I agree, it is shocking the way hard working people are treated in this country.

Tell me about it. I was self employed until late last year, same as you I have worked since I was 16 and payed my National Insurance. I went to sign on in Feb and was told because my wife earns over a certain amount I am entitled to nothing and she will have to keep me >:(

Good luck with the Op :y

I know exactly how you feel 60 years old can't claim bugger all as the wife is working can't even get pension credits. I'm retraining and that's a laugh what chance of a job at my age. :( :( :( :( :( :( :-/ :-/ :-/ :'( :'(
