Ive defragged aswell. Got AVG now, not sure its running right though so will try one of the others.

Out of interest is it recommended to reformat and start again occasionally? i used to every 6 months to a year on older computers but dont have a disc for Vista. Found it kept things running better.

With vista you dont get a disk. and you should not need to re install the OS all the time.
Just have to have anti virus and anti spyware / malware program better letting them run every day say on automatic. its also a good idea to back up your system every couple of weaks depending on how critical the info on your machine is.
you can also do a recovery point say once a week.

personly I dont like vista its far to slow, I got rid of it from my laptop and put Xp on it. now I have to do the same to the wifes pc.
also norton 360 seams to slow the pc down quite a bit so got rid of that aswell.

Norton 360 is crap get Avira for older PCs and Avast for newer ones.

AVG seem to have lost the plot since 7 :(

I think you have more than one problem..

A fresh operating system install will solve..(then go for cumulative patches )

and after install antivirus software before everything..

and also before starting the process check you have all the driver cds handy..

just tried the free version, found 2 LOP issues and 24 corrupt cookies.  Can delete the cookies through the control panel, not sure what alop is, cant register the program as the link to paypal wont let me, either in I or FF, must be a corrupt cookie, so thie loss for not letting me have the tools to sort it on the freebie version. :-/

My Pc will probably explode as soon as I post this but.....I've never had any problems with any of my computers. My curious son goes to all sorts of weird places on the web (I installed K9 after KW recommended it to keep him safe) and I sometimes catch him rebooting with a worried look ;D

As soon as I get a new PC I get rid of the security stuff that is shipped with it and download the free versions of AVG and zone alarm. Had this one for four years now and still...
