New mobile phone recommendations....
« on: 01 October 2009, 00:15:31 »

out of contract end of Nov. And havent even looked at whats out there at the moment. So am well out of touch. Currently on an n95 8gb and its been fine but its time to move on.

Just to give an idea what i'm looking at, thinking along the lines of n97 with side slide querty key board thing and a touch screen, or the yet to be released N900, All Nokia so far but any make considered, except apple obviously i am with TB that one.

Must haves are 3g mobile web browsing and wifi with a decent camera(for a mobile) was hoping for video out and and mobile freeview but only the n96 seems to have that, which is worse than what i have.

Ps. not gay, before "you know who" pipes up. ;D

firstly how long have you been in contract? Go SIM only if its been 5 years+ buy your handset separatly.

Thats what i did, they discounted their £15 / month contract to £5, and got free internet thrown in.

150 txts 150 mins free unlimited internet for £5 inc VAT a month!]

I do like the iPhone but i can't justify the cost, i got a HTC Magic running Google Android.

Its quite a bit smaller than the iPhone the apps store is quite big loads of cool apps. MyTracks is nice, records your GPS position and overlays over google maps. Usefull for walking / running / cycling or even driving. Some very interesting argument ed applications comming along.

They are badged voda, but all are unlocked. Has excellent integration with Google mail, contacts and Picassa.

thanks guys i'll look into those.

But these NTC smart phones, i thought they where all windows mobile operating systems? Seems you can load other o.s. such as the above mentioned Android and others. Do i understand that correctly?

I must say windows mobile bores me to death but if it can be changed its worth looking further.

Nope, most new HTC handsets comming out run Android.

Had the E71 for several months now... Just a bit disappointed with the connection manager but download Smartconnect from Birdstep (it's a free download from the download application) and it's a great improvement :y :y

Personally I'd go for the E75 instead though as it seems a better handset

Not sure I'd currently want to have a Google OS on a phone - just seeing the weekly CERT notices shows its still immature.  That said, how likely is a malicious hack attempt on a phone. But then there is a LOT of very valuable information on most people's phones.

Ah, maybe i have it the wrong way round then, think it was an "HD"(?) model  i saw and they'd put a dodgy version of window 6.5 on it or summat. Along with a warning about bricking the phone if it went wrong. May have been an old you tube video tho?

Some problems i have with with mobile browsing are some pics and videos are not supported. Flash and(or?) java enabled sites wont load fully as the software is incompatible on my device.

There are a few bugs on here as well. As some admins may remember, "the news" above upsets the page rendering on the n95 web browser if the text is not all set the same length on each line, making the page jump around.

Posting can be a challenge if you dont "set" the size of the dialogue box to min width on a pc first, and the scroll boxs on previous posts below the dialogue box dont scroll since the last yab firmware update, so can only see the top 3, or so, lines of other posts. Not a complaint, just wondering if these or any other issues come up on your mobile devices on oof or other sites?....would be nice do avoid as many browsing issues as is reasonably possible. :-)

Not aware of any security issues amongst my gadget mates, some of whome are reasonably techy. Is it something to be concerned about really?

Must admit i am a little disappointed J, no recommendation and not one gay refrance....:-( whats going on? ;D   ;)

this is like how long is a piece of string, what suits one person might not suit you.as well as the toys you want you need to think about how many mins/texs you want and look at contract time as a lot are now 2 years.i would also look at insurance on the phone and if you need a case for the phone as some cases dont fit very well or limit phone use and the cost of a car charger.as you are now out of contract you cn move to any network just ask for your PUK code and you can take your number with you[hint when you do this they but you through to customer servercies who will better deals as they want to keep you so do your homework and you can save by staying with the same net work]
as for phones i would look on the web at the network providers check the specs, make a shortlist then go into town and have a look at it in the shop to make sure it suits YOU

your so right r1, its a very individual thing. However some on here, use their devices to browse  oof and the web in idle mements and keep in touch when away from a pc. They will have a better idea whats out there and best suits their very similar needs than i will as i've been in contract for 18 months and havent bothered to look til now.

Its that similarity in use i'm interested in. Hence the what device question.

Some interesting options mentioned that i hadn't considered, but i suspect it will take something very special to pull me away from Nokia, bugs and all.
