I still find it difficult to believe a removed power sounder would be noticed, its up to them to prove you did it as well. Whats to stop you saying you bought it that way?

Agree, sort of....  Insurance assesors look at many cars, both crashed and burnt (sometimes both at the same time...) and perhaps they will not recall the exact specifics of each model.

Be assured, however, if there is a reason to examine a car to the  n-th degree then they will spot the anomoly and its upto you to answer the hard questions thereafter......  ;)

" Has the car been modified in any way?"

"Has it got a standard manufacturer fitted alarm?"

Those two questions would be enough for them to refuse payment.

Nothing at all, but if you told the insurance company (in that recoreded phone call) the car (including the alarm system) is completely standard (which is what we all do), then they have room to wriggle.

These day you need to think carefully BEFORE you make a statement, because if you don't then it's odds on that it will come back at some point to bite you on the arse  ;)

Is the power sounder additional to any basic alarm then, given the horn works???

I have had 2 Migs over the last 9 years and have never heard an alarm go off in either of them......... :-/ :-/ :-/

Thank you! Absolutely no indication at all! First we knew was the alarm going off sounding very strange, yes, scary stuff indeed!!
The shock is the what ifs....what if we'd been out
What if the kids were in it, we went up the coast yesterday,
What if it had gone up on the petrol forecourt yesterday,
or, at work last night where another car blew up in the summer???

Think we just have to say we were very lucky!!!

And if they don't pay out? Big deal, book price of my car is £750

You could end up liable for an awful lot more than that if your insurance company decides to wash their hands of you on a technicality.

Glad you're all OK. Nasty shock, that.  :o :o

Tunnie posted earlier that he'd heard of a few pre-facelifts going up in flames because of this fault. Do I take it from his comments that facelifts are generally OK?

Odds are that none are safe, could be an age thing? Certainly heard of more in pre facelifts but who knows???
I certainly won't be taking the chance again.

The ones on the facelifts I've seen are a different design, but they are equally prone to batteries leaking and the alarm malfunctioning. Whether they are as prone to combustion remains to be seen.

For a similar cost to a tyre every 5 years it would probably pay to just change it - or open it up and change the batteries if it's not a potted one like this example.
