Decline of the High Street

Just moaning, feel free to ignore.

When we moved to Headingley, near the cricket ground, 16 years ago the local area, which you could walk in about 5-10mins had in it the following(if memory serves),

2 butcher shops,3 green grocers(who also did seasonal garden plants), 1 hardware shop, 1 fishing tackle shop, 1 book shop(with cafe), 3 clothes shops(covering both sexes), 2 Oxfam shops, (1 did large furniture items only), 3/4 small newsagents, 1 electrical/TV shop, 2 pubs(student based clientelle, but not exclusively), 1 Greggs, 1 Ainsleys(bakers), a library, 2 hairdressers and 2!!! undertakers(for some reason.)

There was little need to travel elsewhere for most things.Now the local area consists of,

1 fruiterer(a shop that sells fruit), 1 newsagents, 4 hairdressers,5 bars/pubs( with planning accepted for another 1), 7/8 fast food shops(sandwiches,pizza,KFC,burgers etc.) 1 mobile phone shop, 1 Costa coffee shop, 1 milkshake shop!!!, 3/4 flat/house rental agencies, 1 retro, RETRO!! clothing shop, 1 tattoo shop.Down to 1 undertakers as well.

So we are well covered if we want to get drunk, have a haircut, get a tattoo whilst munching on a kebab,get a new mobile that does a billion things I'll never use,rent a small studio flat with pleasant view for £400p/m, sober up with a Costa coffee and grab a quick banana and a milkshake before planning the musical order for my cremation.

Got to get in the car now to drive all over looking for things that were on the doorstep just a while ago.
Sound like an 'Old Git' I know and at 45 maybe I am nowadays.

I think we have only ourselves to blame as most buyers/consumers seem to prefer the out of town shopping malls and big Tesco type supermarkets.

I always thought that the Co op with a presence in every community missed a big trick by not using their buying power to have the same prices as in the superstores. The biggest supermarket in Spain (by sales volume) is Coviran. they have small supermarkets in every community. Most Spansih housewives still shop locally and every day.

I have got to agree with both points of view, the Country is going/gone to the dogs :(

Because we have big, modern, clean supermarkets that give us a huge range of groceries, dairy and meat products plus many others, fully available almost 24/7, at highly competitive prices, with basically good customer service????

Sorry that does not add up to the "country going/gone to the dogs!"   When there is no choice, nothing on the shelf, and what there is is very expensive, then yes the counrty would have gone to the dogs!! :D :D ;) ;)

Headingley is home to hundreds of students. Those 'shops' are probably doing a roaring trade whereas the old ones were probably struggling.

Tescos, uh i hate the damn place >:( >:( >:( >:(

The quality of the fruit & veg at my local one is rubbish. I only walk in the door nowadays for things or offers i can't get else were.

I know the reasons why it has changed but I was just lamenting the decline of what once used to be an area of Leeds with a mixed population of professionals and students and a lively, vibrant atmosphere rather than the enclave of students it has become since practically every house that came up for sale went to landlords and thusly student accommodation.

Things change ,I know, but I think it's still a shame.

Just been into Alton and blow me if a proper greengrocer hasn't appeared in the high street and doing a roaring trade. No rubbish supermarket veggies for tea tonight. :y

Maybe the tide is turning. Does reply on joe public getting off his @rse, which rarely happens in this country.

Our local Co-op struggled for years and I often wondered how it kept going. Thankfully for them the Kwik-Save near to it is no longer there and the Co-op is enjoying the good times again.

We've had quite a few veggies from these guys: http://www.riverfordorganicveg.co.uk/. Very nice quality stuff, and they have regional depots over much of the country. Order it online at the weekend and it gets dropped off on Tuesdays. The fact that something different turns up every time is nice too, as it forces you to try something different. Wasn't much taken by the chard :-(*) but everything else has been great. We have had meat from them once or twice too.

We're also fortunate to have a decent traditional butcher 5 mins walk away and my mate runs this place about 4 or 5 miles away. http://www.bowtellfarmshop.co.uk/ I've not tasted better sausages anywhere, and chuck his braising steak on the barbie and it puts supermarket prime rump to shame. :y

We get some of our veg from the garden - didn't buy any tomatoes for August to October, no lettuces, nor sprouts, carrots and leeks worked as well.

Most veg from here.
