The Sony Alpha range have a good pedigree. They took over the Minolta range and have further developed it. One of their advantages is they have the Minolta anti shake system built into the body, so all lenses you use have this advantage. Other systems like Nikon build it into the lens, so you need a range of lenses. Plus I think the sensors used by Nikon and Canon are made by Sony, so apart from processing electronics the pics should all be the same quality.

And older autofocus minolta lenses fit the sony mount, so you can buy older film cameras and reuse the lenses.

Sony sensors - apart from a bad batch 6 years ago (replaced this year FOC including a full service ) they are rather good.

I really fancy a well made manual SLR which takes film - my rather old Miranda Sensomat has a light leak on the back and fims are now £15 per roll for Fujichrome

I recently sold my Canon EOS 40D which I thought was an excellent camera. I would agree with what has been said on here, depending on how much you are going to use the camera you need to think about the cost of lenses and perhaps buy a camera that has a good lens range. Canons are good for this as you can buy the sigma lenses which are good quality and less expensive.

Thanks for the replies given me a bit to think about . From whats been said i'm  edging toward the cannon as it seems to have more options on lenes etc but i 'll have a look about and i'm sure i'll be asking more questions what ever one i get.  At least it  seems theres not bad makes.

have been using a canon 300d for a few years now 

had a 300 rebel ( 35mm film )  before that and use some of the lens of that

Next step is to wean yourself off the "Auto" mode and start experimenting.

It's always worth buying a good photography technique book which will teach you the basics of photography, like lighting composition and the relationship between aperature and shutter speed etc. Even practical photography offers tutorials.

Beware of sigma lenses, I have had a few and after a few years the seals seem to fail resulting in fogged internal lense surfaces.
