Do you have a dog
« on: 04 January 2010, 08:26:46 »

If you have a dog keep an eye on its feet in this weather. As its so cold and frosty some dogs are getting kinda frost bite on their pads   :'( If they get wet feet then walk on the fost its a bit like putting your tongue on an ice cube :o :o :o younger dogs are the worst as their pads have not harden up yet.

Excellent advice Ali; I`ve got a 'tenderfoot' (youngster) and he develops a rolling-limp in frigid weather.......`twas -16 C. here last night and they still went out in their bare-paws! :'(

Our springer has the habit of getting snow collecting in her paws ,builds up so much that she can't walk ,so i have to stop so often and clean them out -not a fun thing to do at 11.00 on a freezing cold night!

I got two Westies, and when they went out in the snow it was collecting in their coat in small round balls, but try keeping em in, mine are mental to go out. Just will not stay in for a minute, and sleep under the bed covers with me as well.

If you walk along the road, keep them away from the gritted snow or road. The salt will dry their paws & they'll soon crack.
Imagine yourself walking on the stuff :(

Imagine yourself walking on the stuff :(

rub a small amount of petroleum jelly  (vaseline) onto the pads before walking and again after washing .. don't overdo it .. :)

The only reason my lab stays out the water at the moment, on our reguilar forest walk, is because the lake has a couple of inche sof ice on it.  Be a bugger when the thaw starts to set in....

Had sad call tonight from a client who lost their little dog 2 days ago while on a walk in the snow. Someone found him out in a field, the snow had stuck between the hair on his back legs and formed a huge ball making it impossible for him to move. He had then died from the cold :'(
