Universal Blue
« on: 08 March 2010, 12:37:27 »

I have just emailed Hylomar the following message:

Good Day

I have just pierced a tube of Universal Blue straight from the package and it is solid.  For a non-setting sealant this seems unreasonable.

Your thoughts?

What response should I expect please?  >:(

Well it'll be one of two you'll get....

1) A sincere sounding apology and either a replacement or a refund...

2) Absolutely nothing at all!

I'd take it back to the shop I'd bought it from, your contract is with them, not Hylomar  :y  :y

I suspect I bought it last summer when I did the cambelt and cam cover gaskets but the supplier is not identified on the packaging even though there is a price sticker.

In view of the fault, I can't see the supplier being able to help much any way apart from swapping for a different brand if he stocks one.

I'm glad you were amused.  It is quite humorous.  Just a shame when I thought it would solve my problem sealing the close-coupled cistern!

Parties in breweries spring to mind. ;D

That's good to know in case they try the "never happened before" line.

Also worth a note for potential users to avoid this one maybe?

I remember someone else had the same problem when I ranted about it at the time, so certainly not an isolated incident.

I can't locate your original post but Hylomar have asked me to return the tube so I will let all those interested know how it turns out.

Update

Have just had a 10 minute call from Hylomar's QA person who reports that the batch number is from 2005 so it's been on the supplier's shelf for too long.  Apparently you can deduce the date of manufacture from the code stamped on the end seal and it does release its solvent over time.

He also promised to send a couple of new tubes as replacements so that's good.

Question is whether I will find a use before these ones go solid?

It appears that "non-setting" means that it retains flexibility, not that it is still apply-able.

Sell them on a well known auction site.

It does.

Also it pays to complain, as so many people buy faulty damaged goods (especially at dhristmas time) and just bin them if they dont work properly and the fact it only cost a few quid.
