Having been a union representative in the past I can say that I am sympathetic to the need for unions in large industries in the UK.

However, looking to the third world, I am persuaded that there are very few situations in the UK where workers livelihoods are at risk.  What is usually being defended these days is an afluent lifestyle.

Salaries and working conditions are like the ratchet on your handbrake - you can ramp them up, but no-one will allow them to fall.  All that achieves is an increasingly uncompetitive marketplace globally.

If unions are to continue to have a place they need intelligent leaders who can read the signs of the times and know when to give some slack.  All the rest will follow Arthur Scargill to destination nowhere and industries of the past.

personally I think the Uk could very easily go back into recession. It only needs a business horror story to come out or issues with funding the huge debt.

As far as industrial action is concerned maybe it is a sign of general unease. forthcoming Election etc.

I have been following the BA dispute with interest. they need to modernise of that there is no doubt. Willie Walsh was on Breakfast TV this a.m. and was very credible.

get rid of everyone not doing a front line public sector job who is earning more than £40k - all the quangos, committees, advisors, controllers etc etc can go whistle.

This will be billions of pounds saving - trust me I'm a builder
